Introduction
Attention Statement: According to Center of Disease Control, the habit of smoking results to an average of more than 400000 deaths in a year.
Importance: Smoking is a bad habit that leads people to an addiction problem. Smoking tobacco is not only expensive because one has to keep buy cigarettes over and over but also can be harmful to an individual’s health (Smokefree.gov). People choose to smoke as a way of numbing pain or to feel part of the society.
Thesis: This paper will argue that smoking cause health problems and smokers spend more than $2000 a year.
Preview of the main points: Smoking has resulted to high mortality rate and that it causes serious health problems such as cancer. Also, smoking is expensive and that smokers put other people at risk, second hand smokers, in terms of their health.

1. Number of deaths
- According to a research by the CDC, Smoking causes more than 400,000 deaths in a year which increases the mortality rate.
- Smoking is also associated with heart attacks in that arteries get clogged thereby, making it difficult for an individual to breath.
2. Smoking causes diseases such as cancer (Goel 853-5)
- According to American Cancer Association, lung cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths among people that smoke
- There are other types of cancer associated with smoking such as kidney, pancreas, mouth among others
- When a smoker inhales that smoke, it causes the lungs to be which causes one to get lung cancer due to lack of enough oxygen in the body.
- Smoking brings about birth defects, premature birth or miscarriage. This shows that one has a lower percentage of giving birth to a health child while smoking.
- Also, a child can be retarded as a result of pregnant mother smoking.
3. Smoking is very expensive
- Cigarettes are heavily taxed and cost about $7-9 dollars a pack.
- Smokers spend about $250-300 dollars a month as a way of quenching their addiction (Hinds 117)
- Money spent to buy cigarettes can be used to buy other valuable things in life such as furniture, more clothes and food or pay for a vacation for the family.
4. Smoking is hazardous to second hand smokers (Fong 186)
- Second hand smokers such as children or relationship partners can be at a risk of contracting diseases due to the smoke
- It is crucial to note that second hand smokers not only inhale the tobacco but also the carbon dioxide exhaled by the individuals that smoke.
- Smoking can result to health problems from the smell of cigarettes.
Conclusion
Smoking is addictive and causes health problems that costs a fortune to treat or endangers an individual life. Smoking can cause health problems such as most types of cancer and birth defects. It is important to note that when smoking in a crowd, the crowd can develop health problems as well because they are second hand smokers. Smoking is also expensive in that one can forego the cost of buying cigarettes by investing that money to their families. Thus, individuals should quit smoking in order to reduce the mortality rate and live a healthy life.
