A. Frankly speaking, it was not easy to get the gist of the message. As far as I have understood, the author is going to study ethical issues in terms of criminal law and legal profession, particularly, the police and lawyers like attorneys. There is no doubt that policemen often deal with situations requiring their reaction, based on ethics and moral convictions. However, I wouldn’t agree that if the police had better ethical “training”, people would work with them more readily. I suppose, it would only affect the work of the police as it is, and nothing more. For instance, it would affect their treatment of convicts or sentenced people. As for attorneys, I see a great ocean of ethical issues in this sphere, since it happens sometimes that they have to denounce or, vice versa, defend people according to their work, while they have diametrically opposite feelings towards their clients or protesters. Every day they have to make a choice between their personal belief and their duty.
B. To my mind, the area of study chosen by the author is too vast. As far as I can see, each specialization presupposes the moments when a person must make a decision, and practically each sphere has situations when ethics is taken into consideration. The author is going rather to research the essence of decision-making and ethics, which is an extremely different approach; it could be the first stage of studying ethics at all. The closest sphere which I see in this case is either psychology or sociology, when people face such situations and have to make up their mind concerning ethics at the same time. I believe, there are a lot of interesting aspects and factors related to society and people’s behaviour. The other aspect the author is interested in, i.e., compliance, is closer to psychology, as connected with human actions and way of thinking. Thus, I would recommend the author revising the area of study and narrowing it to a more specific one.
C. As far as I have understood, the author just enlisted some details of conflicts and their resolution. The whole text looks rather like a summary of some book or an article devoted to conflict resolution and criticism. The author hasn’t specified any of the mentioned types or kinds, so I suppose, this aspect needs further work – it would be more interesting and helpful to explain each style, category, and step, by providing definitions and introducing a few examples from life. For example, it was absolutely unfamiliar to me which steps constitute conflict resolution and even after reading the steps, I still cannot understand for sure what they mean; therefore, this detail needs revision and expansion. All in all, the whole text should be expanded in order to attract a reader’s attention and interest him/her. In such comprised form it is nothing but an introduction to a chapter or a book.
D. The last text was quite hard to comprehend. For example, the second sentence was absolutely unclear to me, and I still cannot understand what the author wants to say. However, the researcher provides a very specific and good definition of a conflict, although a pretty simple one. We can underline the logical and coherent transition from the essence of conflict to its resolution. The steps provided should be written in a more detailed way, with sufficient and logical presentation of information, since the words in the text look rather like a draft of a person watching a video or listening to a lecture and making notes. Thus, this point should be also revised and written anew, with good word order and clearer explanations. At the end of the text the author states that these steps will be used by him/her at work, but I would suggest explaining how he/she would use these steps in particular situations, maybe with examples.
