Since it is important to obtain the best possible candidate for legal counsel, I will take many steps to ensure this is done. I will ask other lawyers and companies with legal counsel for referrals . After obtaining referrals, I will also post the open position in order to obtain resumes from other interested attorneys. I will review the resumes and set up interview times. The candidates must have experience as legal counsel for a business, knowledge and understanding of laws pertaining to business, and an understanding of influences on the business environment. I would expect the candidate to also have a high standard of ethics and integrity, and sound judgement skills. The interview will be very important as this is a time for me to evaluate the person’s qualities that I am looking for. These qualities will include communication skills, legal experiences, and knowledge of the industry. During the interview I will be sure to ask great questions. I will also be sure to obtain references from the interviewees and to check the references of those whom I consider good candidates.
Oversight of Legal Counsel
As part of the oversight of legal counsel, I will evaluate the effectiveness of the counsel. In this evaluation, I will look at whether anything has changed with the relationship with him or her; asking myself if I would still hire the individual and if the reasons I hired him or her still exist. I will also evaluate whether the attorney has been effective, responsive, flexible, experienced, familiar and understandable . Effectiveness can be measured by job performance and efficiency. Responsiveness can be measured by how well he or she completes his or her duties as directed. Flexibility can be measured by how well he or she responds to emergency projects or duties. And, experience, familiarity and understanding can be measured by the quality of the work performed. I can conduct this evaluation at any time and preferably often. As legal counsel for the business is very important, it will be a significant duty to ensure his or her effectiveness.
