Impact of 9/11
The September 11 attacks have led to the fact that America no longer feels safe. For the first time in a long time, the war came to its territory. There is a need to change the military doctrine of the United States as it became clear that the armed forces need to be transformed. It is believed that the government has done a lot to enhance security measures. Sharply tightened security measures at airports. The terrorists so easily captured airliners only because the door to the cockpit previously closed, and she could no problem to get any passenger. Now the cabin is forbidden to carry items that can be used as a cold weapon - knives, scissors, golf clubs, corkscrews, baseball bats, etc. The airports are in advance of checking passengers, etc. Despite all the measures taken, checking constantly show that hackers are still able to smuggle in weapons and explosives aircraft. Municipal and city authorities US spend considerable funds for security measures. The entry of foreigners to the United States is very toughened.
Some experts believe that despite the increase in spending on security changes do not give real effect. Edward Felten calls the measures taken at airports after the September 11 attacks as “Security theater”.
Security theater requires real cash expenditures, but by definition, does not give any advantages in terms of security, or that the benefit is so minimal that it is not worth the cost. Security theater usually imposes restrictions or causes people to take very specific procedures that may be perceived as limiting personal freedom and privacy.
As security measures are often narrow and specific (for example, focus on the potential explosives in shoes), they allow potential attackers to find other methods of attack. In many cases, intrusive measures of security theater create secondary negative effects, the real value of which is difficult to assess. These effects are often associated with fear, for example, a person, seeing a large number of armed guards and thorough searches, getting nervous, considering that there is a real danger. In the context of air travel, this unfounded fear leads to the fact that some people refuse to use air transport - this refusal is essentially thoughtless, counterproductive.
