What impact is it leading to?
PepsiCo has created the potential to recharge two billion litres of water. The company achieved this by application ReCon water, which is a program steered towards improvement of water use efficiency. They also repaired all the leaks in their beverage plants to recycling and reusing water. In 2013, PepsiCo’s operational water efficiency programs had an achievement in water flow and managed to serve more than fourteen million people. In turn they made a saving of $15 million.
Is it hype (false marketing)? Or does it have a positive impact?
The marketing of the strategies of PepsiCo is not hype and it has very positive impact on the environment and even other companies. The strategic priorities of the PepsiCo’s that makes it have the positives impact on the local communities are; human sustainability, they tend to improve availability of affordable nutrition. Environmental sustainability, they promote access to water and enhance sustainable agriculture capability. Finally they priorities on talent sustainability, this enhances job readiness and empower women and girls (PepsiCo 2016).
Will other industries follow suit?
It is expected that other organizations whether in the industry or not will follow suit, the PepsiCo company due to its sustainable programs. The philanthropic acts greatly enhance a company’s image in the eye of the public and other organization will want to have the same.
4. The PepsiCo controversy.
PepsiCo has had few cases of against them owing to their activities conducted in their manufacturing units in certain parts of the world. They have come under heavy scrutiny after it was publicly announced that they were among the top organizations causing water pollutants through their emissions, they have also been criticized for having a very high energy consumption rate. Further, at a certain point Pepsi sale in India were banned after alarming levels of pesticides were discovered in their drinks, which was greatly more than the allowed limits.
PepsiCo’s positive projects are criticized by some as being just another “Greenwashing” campaign to save them of what they were exposed of earlier. Although, the previous negative discoveries of PepsiCo were alarming and critical, PepsiCo are putting immense efforts into changing their image and their impact on the environment for the better. Corporate Social Responsibility is key to an organization on PepsiCo’s lack of focus on such area earlier had lead to such negative incidences. The PepsiCo can be just started their projects out of pity.
Regardless of the previous negativities faced by PepsiCo, PepsiCo heave now contributed greatly to society in multiple aspects and various projects. They have positively impacted the environmental sector since they made it one of their prioritized strategies; they have done this by improving the agricultural sector and effectively managing water. They have also created initiative to improve health and education sector. They offer diploma courses on how they take the course practices and eventually employing those who have gone through the process (PepsiCo 2016). They have improved the affordability of nutritional diet to the unfortunate communities. PepsiCo’s enthusiasm for social responsibility is not just limited to fixing the water problem but also extrapolated to health and education, by supporting the youth and scholarships strategies.
Connection to course material
The concept of sustainability sweet potato is depicted by the PepsiCo in a very clear manner. They have combined both their interest and the company’s interest. From this they reap the following benefits, business growth, efficiency growth, innovation and inspiration. The company used the basic matrix learnt to come up with ways of improving water quality and quantity. They focused on the total water used and the amount that actually went to waste. They minimized what they considered being bad, they greatly minimized water wastage and water pollution. They optimized in creating healthy water and making it available to everyone. The best way to assess the PepsiCo is using the triple bottom line. This includes assessing the social impact, environment impact and profit. All this three aspect form the basis of their prioritized strategies.
