It is just natural that not everyone has the opportunity to become a leader. However, those who are unfortunate not be leaders will not follow anyone who shows up just to be a leader. Moreover, people do not like to accept old fashioned leaders that are authoritative, control freaks, and who like to enforce new management procedures on others. Followers are more comfortable with leaders who posses well- rooted human values and who have respect for talents and contributions given by others. Followers would like leaders who make them feel enthusiastic in all their actions. For that reason, effective running of an organization requires leadership that must be able to have clearly defined priorities, visionary thinking, and efficient strategies. These are qualities that any organization seeking to have an organized and working system ought to expect on their leaders. It is upon that that followers get the trust, compassion, stability and hope from their leaders. According to Schien, certain leadership skills vary depending on the management hierarchy. For the lower leaders, management, technical and human skills are most important. In the middle management, technical, human and conceptual management becomes most important. At the upper level of management, it is important for leaders to master conceptual and human skills (p. 247).
Charisma as a leadership model is one that Schien discusses as embedded on intelligence, and pragmatism. This model of leadership incorporates persuasion of subjects to commit to a dream conceived by someone. Leadership from charisma lies on the ability to capture attention and to lead; the problem with charisma is that it very hard to measure its success. However, corporate leaders must also pose some of the key characteristics defended in the charisma model. The aspect of persuasion and negotiation are needed by all type of leaders. A business leader must be able to influence key decision through persuasion and negotiation in both the internal and external business environment (p. 245).
Present day leaders can learn from the training and delegation of responsibilities. This critical issue requires a lot of attention. Members of organization can learn from experience, promotions, and performance appraisals can be considered a means of managing the future of an organization. The business process, as well as the workforce, should work together harmoniously to ensure that products are of high quality. The leader of the organization defines strategic business leadership. Mutual trust, effective communication skills, active empathy, accessibility by workers and personal courage also work for the growth of leadership. He argued that effective leadership is fundamentally about developing people, setting defined directions to be followed and designing an organization to be successful Effective leadership involves identifying people within the organization who would be potential leaders and letting them gain the knowledge and skills required for success.
Since human needs serve as motivators, understanding how people strive to satisfy these needs is crucial for leaders in different workplaces. Once leaders in various workplaces understand the needs that motivate people to work, they can provide the means of satisfying them. Consequently, people will pursue these means, and in the process perform better at work. Therefore, another view can suffice to correct the wrongs done by the conventional view. MacGregor asserts that contemporary work environments do not provide employees the opportunity to exploit their abilities and achieve their goals. Workplaces limit the performance of their employees by viewing them as naturally lazy, which compels the management to control them to achieve the required results. People are more productive when given freedom to use their talents and abilities. Moreover, when people are encouraged to accept responsibility at all organizational levels, all their needs can easily be achieved.
