Should Smoking Be banned from Bars and Eating Establishments?
Smoking is one of the most irritating things in the world. Many people prefer not to sit or even stand next to someone who is smoking. Smoking produces bad smell of tobacco and nicotine which may irritate many people who are near someone who is smoking. Smoking is a killer. This is a strong message that should be clearly adhered to and used to drive people towards the prevention of diseases related to smoking as well as death. Smoking has had very numerous negative effects on the lives of people as it attributed to financial, social and health factors (Beales, 2000). Many research institutes have for long been on the lime light to articulate the effects of smoking but people just do not listen. The irony in cigarette smoking is that, the cigarette packet is usually indicated that cigarette smoking is harmful to people’s health but smokers often ignore the warning sign. Smoking is also very addictive as the nicotine contained in them gives people the urge to satisfy their desire (Bachman, 2012). Needless to say, smoking also brings a whole range of diseases that are harmful to both the smokers and the people around smokers. This paper will focus on the debate whether or not smoking in bars and eating establishments should be banned.
Bars and eating establishments are all public places. Such public places such as the bars accommodate all types of people who go there to have fun with friends, as well as, have a drink to quench their thirst and have fun at the same time. However, if such places, allow smokers to smoke from there, they may limit the number of other people who use the same bars from using them. The people who go to bars but do not smoke always feel uncomfortable whenever, there are smokers in the same bars; hence, they even leave the premises immediately smokers get in and start smoking (Beales, 2000).
Additionally, eating establishment are public places that are visited by all people including children. Some of these children have respiratory disorders such as asthma. When exposed to such environment full of smokers, they have problems in breathing and sometimes their disorder worsen. Such circumstance force parents to keep their children in the houses instead of taking them to food establishment, where they can eat and fun with their fellow children. Therefore, smoking in public places, such as bars and eating establishment for the sake of the non-smokers and children, especially the ones with respiratory disorders (Bachman, 2012).
When smoking, the people around the person smoking get affected. These people are usually referred to as passive or secondary smokers. Passive smoking is a term used to refer to the process where, someone who is smoking directly takes in the smoke, and it is also commonly known as environmental tobacco smoke or second-hand smoking. This happens when the smoke coming out of the cigarette being smoked by an active smoke is released into the general environment causing people who have no intention of smoking to inhale it. Second-hand smoking, passive smoking or secondary smoking has many effects on the health of a person. It may lead to disabilities, diseases, and even death. Such serious diseases that occur due to passive smoking may include cancer which can cause harm to the respiratory system of an individual. Other diseases include asthma which becomes even more dangerous when a person gets asthma attacks due to the smoke released in the environment by the active tobacco smokers. It is therefore unfair that non-smokers contract such diseases from the active smoker’s smoke, given that they do not smoke. It would make a lot of sense if smoking in bars and other eating establishments is banned (Mak, and Day, 2012).
Bar owners and other restaurants owners, as well as the entire public should spear head the campaigns to ban smoking in bars and eating establishments. Statistics show that only a small number of people smoke cigarettes, therefore, the majority of the world’s population are not smokers (Bachman, 2012). There it is only fair that smoking in bars and eating establishment is banned to ensure that the non-smoking population is comfortable whenever, they go to the bars or eating establishment. It would also make sense if the small population that smokes is allowed a small space in the public places where they can smoke freely. Such place should be built a few meters or even kilometers away from social places where families, friends and other people who are irritated by the smoke from cigarette gather. In so doing, a solution to this big problem will be solved and everyone will live in peace together, without some having to make other uncomfortable.
In conclusion, it is clear that smoking have many negative effects on the smoke as well the non-smokers, as long the inhale the smoke released into the environment by the active smokers. Passive smoking causes; discomfort to the non-smokers. Whenever, there are smokers in the same bars where they non-smokers are, they are even forced to leave the premises immediately smokers get in and start smoking. Even more serious affects that passive smoking cause to the health of a person. The bad and the irritating smell of tobacco smell is also an effect theta should definitely motivate the banning of smoking in bars and eating establishments.
