Tom Scott had a difficult life growing up. His family was fragmented because his parents had divorced when he was barely two years old and since then his mother has been his only family. Living with her was one hell of an experience because she is an alcoholic. Her situation made his life extremely difficult because whenever she was drunk, she could call him names, beat him and lock him up in his room for up to two days. Such is the trauma he went through in the hands of his mother, who was not the best caregiver he had as a child. Scott’s life was made miserable in the hands of his mother and because he lacked a father figure in his life, he had no one to turn to but to put up with the mistreatment from his mother. He was an only child and hence had no sibling to share his problems with and this made the situation worse for him.
It is hard enough for a child to live without the other parent especially when the parent is alive. Worse still, the only parent he was staying with was not taking good care of himself. In the hands of his mother he had to put up with her drunkenness and not filial love as is naturally expected. He has no one to take care of him and the situation is made worse by the fact that his mother is currently sick. Perhaps the childhood experiences that he had in made him hate his mother and everyone around him, and for this reason, he cannot make friends and keep them. He is a lonely man whose only companion is the uncle, who was not in the picture of his upbringing from way back when he was a young boy. The breakup of his parents did him a huge blow and that is the event that set him on the wrong path of social life.
During his childhood, Scott never got any form of support from anyone including his mother. The neglect he got from her forced him to run away from the world and because there was no one to teach him the principles that make a virtuous man, he does not have any. He was psychologically abused either knowingly or unknowingly. Knowingly in the sense that his mother could abuse him verbally and unknowingly through her drinking habits that Scott felt were not right. She could drink and misbehave in his presence, and this caused him the trauma that haunts him to this day. He had the sad traumatic experience of being locked in his room for up to two days. For a young boy the experience may have done him a major blow considering he had no one to turn to. Even at a young age it was hard for him to make friends and he had no one to turn to when life at home became unbearable.
At the moment Scott prefers keeping to himself and does not have any company of a friend or a loved one save for his uncle who is trying to help him out of this quagmire he has found himself. He seems to lack a sense of personal hygiene and does not even shower, comb his hair, cut his nails and put on good clothing. Under his circumstances it is difficult making friends leave alone keep them. He has no one to help him keep on track and this could be the reason he is harboring suicidal thoughts. When a person feels lonely and distanced from the rest of the world, they suffer psychologically and can even take their own lives. In fact this is what he is going through at the moment. He has not kept friends in his life and perhaps the reason is his paranoia and lack of trust for anyone, including his mother. Mothers are the best friends that children can have before meeting other friends outside of the home. In his case not even his mother is close to him and this is the reason for his loneliness. When he locks himself up he feels safer than when he is in the company of other people.
The life Scott is leading is made worse by his drinking habits; he indulges in drinking alcohol and smoking to escape the realities of the hardships he is facing. His fear for his life and his habit of keeping to himself prevents him from interacting with other people. Alcohol and cigarettes help in compensating for what he lacks in society and one will be pardoned to say that these two are is best friends. They help him forget his woes even if it is for a short time. Due to the fact that he has low self esteem he would rather keep off the public and prefer drowning himself in his sorrows. He behaves like he is running away from his problems but then we know that will not solve his problems. He has decided to seek medical attention and this means that he wants to find a solution to his problems. Through counseling he will adjust to normal lifestyles and maybe he will stop smoking and drinking alcohol and become part of his community. His past is still haunting him and he wishes to get away from it. Scott has the will but lacks the strength to propel him into new heights in order to give his life a new beginning. He is sure going to get the strength after attending his counseling sessions.
He suffered physical and mental abuse going by the happenings of his life, right from the departure of his father up to the time he became an independent man. H may have gone to school all the way up to university but he has no friend from all those years. It may have been difficult for him to make friends because of the bad attitude he may have developed all through his life. He does not care for anyone at all perhaps because he feels no one cares for him, not even his mother and father. In his thoughts, he feels that everyone is up against him and this has turned him into a complete introvert. It is no wonder that Scott’s social life is one hell of a life because at thirty three years, he does not know what dating is and how to go about it. But even in all these inferiority complex issues and family problems, he feels that he can be helped and it is for this reason that he has come to seek help from me.
