The world of sports is quickly changing especially in the field of journalism. This is due to the increase use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instigram and other sites to rely message to audiences. The rationale behind this increasing use of social media is due to the fact that it is easier and cheaper. Undoubtedly, it can even reach a wider scope of audience compared to other traditional medium. It can share news stories regarding the latest sports happening even in different parts of the world. In this line, it is no surprise that some well-known sports journalists are now relying on social media to increase their visibility to the world and build on their followers.
The sports journalist that I chose for this assignment is Andy Katz. He is known as a senior college basketball journalist for a known sport channel ESPN. Due to this experience in sports casting he was able to land himself a regular sports analyst role in College Game Night again in ESPN. From his background and profile alone, most of his social media posts such as in Twitter involve Collegiate Basketball. He would often post about post-game analysis, player features or even tweetcast of scores as the game is happening. He also often retweet or post other related articles from other similar sources. He posts other content such as short videos, quotations from players, coaches and other sports personalities. He often covers NCAA and even the NBA draft.
He does not interact much with other people outside the sports profession, because it is observed that most of his tweets are tagging only players or other sports personalities when he does his game analysis or preview. He often gives fans a heads-up regarding the match that will happen next like it includes the team that will compete, the time and the venue of the games. When he does interact with other people, he answers their questions using game statistics. However, due to his career as a sports reporter he is also not spared from criticism or argument with other people and sports personality. Jim Boeheim appeared to have rift with Katz when Katz interviewed him during one of his games. Boeheim was quoted to have said that he will answer anybody’s queries expect for Kutz. A lot of people speculated that the incident happened because of Katz pre-game conversation with Southerland. In his defense, Katz immediately countered that he does what every sports reporter does.
It is observed that he uses to social media on a regular season even on off-season. As a sports journalist, it is vital for him to keep people updated regarding the things going on the world of sports even during off-seasons. Pre-season analysis, for example, is a good way for him to hype people regarding what to expect in the coming season. In an interview Katz did with Raphael Gellar last 2013 he mentioned that he enjoys expanding his coverage in sports. Outside of his reputation in covering collegiate sports he is now involving in hosting such as in Outside the Line which he seeks variety in the things he do. Social Media is a good way to him to continue building his career and followers. In his twitter account, for instance, he has an estimate of 370,000 followers. The numbers speak of his credibility as a sports journalist.
