One of the responsibilities of the public schools is to prepare young people for the future. In fulfilling this duty, it is important to continue teaching and testing student son the topic of civic education. Civics is a unique subject matter because it teachers students about the attendant rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. It is a mixture of law, politics, government, and history all rolled in one.
In American society, the democratic process is the way in which our nation’s leaders and policymakers are chosen. It is important that students have knowledge about this process and be able to make informed decisions about elected leaders. Students need to be made aware of the significance of exercising their rights as citizens, such as the right to vote. Too many young people today are either ill-informed, ignorant, or simply do not care about issues that impact the nation. Requiring and testing civics will ensure that citizens are informed and at least possess a basic understanding of rights and duties of citizenship.
Law and politics are often intertwined. Requiring civics provides students with rudimentary concepts and ideas about how law fits into society and how it impacts rights and responsibilities. The law touches nearly every facet of life, and almost no activity is entirely free from some type of laws, rules, or regulations. As the school’s primary responsibility is to prepare students for future careers and to become successful adults, the schools should continue to teach civics as a required course. Political discourse and debate is at the core of American democracy; and Civic Education enlightens students as to important American values.
