Introduction
The theater seating was like a proscenium theater, but unfortunately without the raked seating I found myself constantly shifting, trying to see over the girl in front of me. The stage is set up like middle-class American apartment, with some of furniture’s. When I walked in the theater, one guy was sitting in sofa at the middle of stage, he never moved and look like really focusing his character. To begin The American Dream, lights are gone with some melodies; the point light goes to the guy. He was talking about the theater’s etiquette such as do not take any video and off the sound of phone with some acting with his character.
Flow of the Play
The main character in this play appeared mommy and daddy, whose lives are full of vanity. At this first scene Daddy and Mommy are in their apartment waiting for somebody who is expected to come and fix the toilet. As they wait Mommy tells of a story about an adventure she had while buying a hat. She also gives an explanation of some controversy she had about the color of the hat with the head of women’s club. As they talk Daddy gives un-enthusiastic answers and Mommy seems to be getting offended by this attitude. She insists that Daddy should listen to her and just to be sure he listens, she keeps asking him to repeat what she is saying. The grandma joins the scene at this point she becomes the centre of their conversation. They tease her about ‘johnny-do’s’. A knock is heard at the door and daddy stands us to go and open it. As he goes Mommy provokes him by talking awfully about his masculinity.
The conversation that follows after Mrs. Baker entering is confusing. Neither Mommy nor Daddy seems to remember the reason as to why Mrs. Baker has visited. Their conversation is unfocused and at some point Mrs. Baker takes off her dress and creates some immature reaction on how Daddy and Mommy have satirized guest relationship. Daddy and Mommy then leaves the scene to check for water for Mrs. Bakers’ and Grandmas’ room. Having left Mrs. Baker and grandma alone Grandma explains that her reason for being there is because Daddy and Mommy mutilated the child they last had from adoption, and that Mrs. Baker should give them another child.
A young and handsome man then enters the scene and at first Granma is afraid that he could be the man Mommy has been threatening will come to take her away. The young man explains that he is looking for a job- he also describe his experience in Hollywood and the fact that he is unable to love. It is at this point that Grandma realizes the young man is a twin to the child Mommy and Daddy mutilated. Grandma then leaves the play and joins the audience at a place where only the young man and Mrs. Baker can see her. Mommy and Daddy are left believing that the van man has taken grandma away, the young man later hoes to work for Daddy and Mommy. The play ends with Mommy giving a provocative speech to the young man and grandma gives a narrative like story to the audience.
Analysis of the Play
The couple characters are simply absurd, ideologist of success woman and an ordinary timid man. Mommy was born in a poor family where she also grew up. When she was of age she married the rich American man who lived in the United States. The marriage of Mommy and Daddy brought out issues on whether there is a need for the grandmother being taken to the nursing home. This was so strange and the grandmother tried to warn Daddy that his wife was there not for love but for his wealth. The play is interesting to watch due to several deep impression things that happen both on stage management and with the play.
One of thing is the production of light. Therefore, the lights were turned on with the intensity increasing and reducing to match the emotions of the characters at the scene. Also the lights are change situation, when one of actor acting alone monologue scene, the light was change to point light to the actor. This made it is for the audience to notice even the slightest change on the characters movement or emotions.
Secondly the circulation of the play was very impressive. Although the theater was small, actors were always kept in the formation triangle or diagonal and they to continue moving in that formation. Also, it did not get too close to each other, showed people the face.
Thirdly, actors’ gestures, tone, emotion, and expression were really good. Actors did not forget and stopping their gestures with their character even when other people doing their part, the other actors were plays their gestures as not to disturb the part of actor.
Finally, when the actors out while scene, they continue to act the emotions of the character. This is very important as it makes the play look very real to the audience.
