Introduction
The death penalty is used in many countries to decrease crime rates and discourage crimes. However, the death penalty should be stopped in all countries since it is ineffective and may cause moral dilemmas. This paper will likewise discuss supporting statements to this claim.
Body
The death penalty is ineffective and unnecessary. Surveys across countries arrived into a conclusion that the death penalty is ineffective since it was ranked last among various methods that reduce crimes (Rust-Tierney, 2014). Provided that the death penalty is ineffective, its implementation means that money go to waste. As a matter of fact, it had been analyzed that execution costs more than placing a life sentence by as much as twenty times (“Death Penalty”, 2013).
Aside from the death penalty being costly and ineffective, its implementation also gives rise to moral dilemmas. It is not about who deserves to die or live; it is a matter of who has the capacity to appeal for their lives. According to Stevenson, death penalty threatens individuals not based on their guilt, but by the amount of money one has (2004). This immoral circumstances make the death penalty as not only ineffective, but also unjust.
There are many reasons why the proponents of the death penalty continue to believe in the notion. They believe that the death penalty is only proper to those who had committed heinous crimes and that it may deter crimes. However, they had not put into consideration the fact that death is irreversible and the system should be directed to rehabilitating criminals. Additionally, there have been no enough evidence that may support the claim that the death penalty may deter crimes effectively (Stevenson, 2004).
Conclusion
The death penalty is unnecessary and give rise to moral dilemmas. As such, its implementation should be stopped in all countries. Governing bodies should likewise focus on the implementation of their rules and the rehabilitation of criminals so that they may become productive.
