INTRODUCTION
If one chose to think about they would find that with all of the different languages in the world, some might remark that it is a wonder that people manage to understand one another at all. There are so many languages and dialects all across the globe, some many people may never have heard of. There are languages that no one speaks anymore, languages spoken by only a few and some that have a dominate presence globally. English is not a language that is native only to one small nation; it is the national language of the United States, but also, parts of Europe and Canada. English is a language that many people struggle to learn well, but often hope that it will better their ability to function in their day-to-day lives all over the world. It is often remarked as being one of the hardest languages to learn, it is never exactly the same in different parts of the world. There are distinct variations in grammar, spelling and slang depending where one is from. That being said there are many reasons why learning, speaking and understanding English is advantageous.
DISCUSSION
Language is one of the key skills that separate human beings from other animal species. The ability to produce complex sounds and develop complex languages is what has allowed humanity as a species to be as successful as it has been. There are a number of reasons that learning to speak and understand English is essential in the modern world. The first is that many businesses and multinational organizations are conducted primarily in English and in order to make communication among employers and employees fluid and without confusion. More often than not that language is English. The field of medicine has always involved the use of Latin, but it is also highly dependent on English in a global forum. This makes it more likely that there will be less language barrier in emergency medical situations (Ingram & Sasaki, 2003). A large amount of media, especially entertainment media, originates in English, be it films, television and music. Being able to understand English allows many to feel more comfortable with modern international pop culture. Lastly, is the internet, more than half of the content available on the internet is posted primarily in English. So if one wants to be able to enjoy the information available on the internet, English is essential. We see that in a time when globalized business are interconnected and interacting, it is estimated that by 2050 more than half of the world will be fairly competent in English (Johnson, 2009).
CONCLUSION
English is one of the dominant languages on the planet, again it may not be the most spoken language in the scope of the world, but it is the most widespread language in the world. It goes without saying that the English language has a lot of influence across the globe for any number of reasons. It is prevalent in areas of business, medicine, entertainment and internet information. In fairness, that does not mean that people who speak English as a native language should not make efforts to learn the other languages of the world, as well. Becoming bilingual or multilingual in the modern globalized nature of the world it is incredibly beneficial. The more familiar people become the better all will communicate with one another.
