Question #1.
There are still questions if the mind is actually modular. Some might believe that the mind has the capability to categorize layers such as beliefs, concepts, languages and other learned knowledge. However, these things can also be solved through algorithm. The mind, contains systems which can be categorized under their function. Therefore, the mind cannot be fully modular. In order to create machines that can think like humans, you have to strip a person down to the core. This core will reveal several layers which can be then labelled. It is only after these layers and categories are given their function that they will be able to work. Therefore, it is possible for a machine to be given commands and for it to respond as a human. Although, not all theories are perfect, that is why they are known as theories. Everything in the world is based on some sort of algorithm, and this can be broken down once something is studied intensely. When it comes to something as complex as the human mind, certain variables and conditions should be taken into account. The problem is that all humans think differently, however it is also possible to generalize rational human thinking. It cannot be said that the mind is completely modular as there are certain groups of people who share the same beliefs, would take similar actions and have the same likes or dislikes.
Question #2.
A dynamic system is something that constantly changes given the conditions and other variables that surround it. It is constantly adapting to the environment in order to flow with the changes. I believe that I am a dynamic system that is able to change, based on the conditions given to me. For example, if I am set in one way of doing things, it is possible for me to change my routing or schedule because of conditions in which school or familial obligations force me to. Time sensitivity is something that can be related to this since I am conditioned to wake up at a certain time to go to school each day. Although these things can change during summer breaks, Christmas beaks and the like, I am still seen to flow back into the regular schedule when needed. Additionally, not only is my body clock or time sensitivity something that can change, also my interactions with other people. I speak or act in ways that I believe will be better in terms of communicating with whom I am with.
Question #3.
The mind has certain modules or a structure that can be seen to have these innate thoughts or beliefs. Neanderthals were seen to burry their dead in a way that they believed there is an afterlife. This created a “god module” because of the need for a belief that death is not the end. This was probably carried on throughout other civilizations because people would like to think that their dead are just somewhere waiting for them. For humans, it gives us peace of mind, or some sort of comfort that death is not the end.
Question #4.
In Leslie’s theory of mind reading and pretend play, children have the ability to pretend. This kind of ability, for a child, represents their entire world. They can go wherever they want and do whatever they want. When it comes to neuroimaging and robotics, this type of theory can be connected with virtual environments where people can “pretend” they are somewhere or doing what they want to do. The machine or robot will be able to give them the stimulation that they are actually engaging in an activity which they are not. This type of virtual pretend play can help people accomplish things that they have always wanted to do. For a little while, people will be able to live their dreams through pretending. However, to them, it will feel real.
