Marriage used to be a union based on necessity, where a husband and a wife used marriage to create a free means of labor to work on the family’s plot of land. However, the idea of marriage has changed from a union of a need to a union of want. Today, two people become married because they want to spend the rest of their lives together, not because they have to. Since marriage has become a more independent concept, the rate of divorce has risen as well. Now, both partners need to be happy for a marriage to work and prevent divorce. While many factors contribute to a happy marriage, communication is, by far, the most important one between partners.
If two partners communicate successfully with one another, then the majority of potential problems and pitfalls of marriage can be avoided. Communication is essential in the ability for a couple to voice their pleasure or displeasure in their partnership. This feedback is valuable because it gives both people the capacity to reflect upon their actions and decide if changes need to be made. Even if there are problems in the marriage, communication is still required for each member in the marriage to discuss why they feel a certain way and to suggest a remedy. The more a couple communicates with each other, then these problems can be avoided before they grow too large and potentially lead to a divorce.
Many aspects can make a marriage happy and fruitful, but if two people cannot communicate with each other, then they cannot begin to address any of these other aspects. The more a couple can speak effectively with each other, the more they will know and anticipate potential roadblocks. If these issues can be dealt with, then the marriage can be happy for each partner. Today, people do not need to be married, but if they have the ability to communicate with each other, then they can continue to want to be married and hopefully live a happy life.
