As a child practitioner in a preschool, it is expected that children would behave in different manner depending on factors and situation that affect their conduct. The current discourse hereby aims to present ways to demonstrate acceptance and responsiveness in scenarios, specifically indicated as follows:
1. A Toddler Having a Temper Tantrum
The best way to address a toddler’s tantrum is by initially assessing the kind of tantrum that is being exhibited; meaning, if there is some risk or danger to hurt himself or herself or those he or she is currently with (classmates). If the toddler is safely by himself or herself, it is actually more appropriate to ignore the tantrum initially and assume a calm stance, as much as possible. If, on the other hand, the toddler’s actions could pose dangers or risks of hurting himself or herself and other children, it is most appropriate to show acceptance by calmly, yet firmly, embracing or holding the toddler and leading him or her in a safe location. Then, one could ask calmly what is it that is causing the behavior and allowing the toddler to verbalize the feelings. Enforce acceptance coping approach by acknowledging that one understands and empathizes with the toddler’s feelings and to respond through showing concern, focus on the child’s feelings, and to acknowledge understanding.
2. Showing you a hand painting they are doing.
When toddlers show a hand painting that they are doing, the most appropriate acceptance approach is to go down to their level; show eye contact by looking at them and showing genuine interest in the hand painting that was being worked on. Also, one can use intent listening skills and communicate to them that one immensely appreciates the skills and the creativity that was applied in the hand painting. One could openly praise the vivid colors that were used and the aesthetic value seen from the work of art that was done by the toddlers.
3. Attempting to tell you they want a toy.
If a toddler attempts to tell me that they want a toy, the acceptable acceptance and responsive approach would be to listen intently and to encourage them to speak. One could ask what they want about this toy and encourage discussion by focusing on the positive aspects of the sharing. If one could not get hold of providing the toy for the toddler at the moment, one could encourage activities that would channel focus from the toy to the activity – for instance, encouraging the toddler to draw the toy and paint it according to their preferences.
4. Wanting to go outside but it's raining.
One could respond when toddlers want to go outside through accepting what they are saying and by explaining to them that it is actually really nice to go outside but not at the moment since it is raining. It could be expressed that one would not want them to get wet and catch a cold or get sick. One could explain that if the weather is better tomorrow they can go outside. In the meantime, some productive activities could be offered like singing songs, drawing, coloring pictures, telling stories, or even watching the rain from the window and asking the toddlers what they usually love to do indoors when it is raining. These alternative courses of action would encourage them to channel the desire to go outside into affirming that there are enjoyable activities which could be done indoors.
