Reflection on Maddy’s work
I agree with you that some data point out that the USA student lag behind internationally based on standardized scores. However, this may not be the correct position considering other aspects such as differences in course content, culture, and the social, political, and economic status of the various regions. Fundamentally, differences are inherent and, therefore, students may behave differently while taking the standardized scores making the conclusion not entirely reliable. Carnoy and Rothstein (2013) stated that conclusions from the standardized test are often oversimplified, exaggerated, and misleading.
Notwithstanding the above propositions, standardized tests remain the most viable means of evaluating student from different regions of the world.
Although the media seems to point out the negative aspects of the education system, the information provided stirs debates on the education system leading to policy changes. Without the publicity, there would be little or no input from the stakeholders on the same.
Reflection on Tim’s work
I agree with you that apportioning blame among the stakeholders of the education system leads to inaction. There are little or no efforts to end poverty due to lack of collaboration between the schools and the government. The allocation of resources for teacher in-servicing to improve their performance is critical because one can only perform optimally in a conducive environment and with all the prerequisite skills. Moreover, as you noted, students experience different backgrounds that affect their performance. Efforts to provide resources to enable the teachers carry out a holistic evaluation of the students would help improve education outcomes.
My parents do not have all the necessary resources to provide all I need for my studies.
Yes. Teachers need to know how to help poor children. The teacher curriculum should include innovation skills, resource mobilization, and counseling skills.
