The artifact in the chosen picture is the people. Some of the men are wearing traditional Middle Eastern garb. The other gentlemen in the photo are dressed in more Western clothing. They follow different traditions, and may have a difficult time communicating between each other. The difficulty may be language based as well as tradition-based. Whether it is one issue, or a combination of both, there is a gap in communication between the people. Cells in the human body act in much the same way. Though there may or may not be direct barriers, cells find a way to communicate information throughout the body to assist in its ability to run efficiently.
In this picture, the people are establishing contact directly, just as animal cells do when they bind together. The cells basically are talking between each other, sharing vital information about body processes and hormone levels. Animal cells can communicate by direct contact and cell recognition. These cells can also communicate by local signals. With local cell communication, the cells all communicate with each other through a through a secreting cell. The secreting cell is the “translator” who regulates and secretes the information so that the other cells know what to do with it.
Cells can also communicate through long distance. Cells transfer hormones and information packets through the bloodstream to one another. This can be equated to people using a telephone or internet connection to communicate with one another. This means that people can communicate with the person across the street or a person halfway around the world. Cells and people find ways of bridging communication gaps at any distance. Whether cells are right next to each other, or communicating between the brain and the feet, they find ways to pass the information and hormones along to the other cells, in such a way that the other cell knows exactly what to do with the hormones or the information other cells require to process the body’s daily activity. This is how nerve cells communicate pain, and it is how white blood cells fight off infection. Communication by cells is no different than communication between everyday people. The end result is ultimately the same. Information is passed between two sources to ensure efficient understanding. Communication comes down to the very cell.
