Coleman is more of an innovator in the field of jazz music. In fact, together with his band mates, they went against the grain by redefining their own style of jazz and stopped following the conventional forms that had been used there before. There before, jazz musicians run a tune’s change. Instead, he chose to use unfettered melodic inventiveness. Coleman went out of his way to play his kind of music and tunes that were pre-given to him. His style was different and therefore, he came up with his own signature which was identifiable to only him. He found his own movable clef and sought out to define it and bring it out in his own way that was different from the rest. His way of singing was typical of a person trying not to modify themselves but rather use that which they had without necessarily trying to copy or keep up with a predetermined way of doing things. Of course he received a lot of backlash but at the end of the day he left a mark in the history of jazz music as one musician who defined his own way of singing without imitating any other person’s sound.
Having defied conventional ways of singing jazz music, several of his songs including ‘Bird Food’ produced in 1959 are presented in a distinct way that can be attributed to only him. All the members who work together with him do their bits so well. The instruments are seamlessly connected to each other but distinctly posses their individual sounds. Coleman can be heard in his distinctive plastic alto; Charlie has his bassline as Billy brings out his drums so beautifully. It is a rare combination of instrument that brings out the melody in a rare way that cannot be likened to any other jazz musician before him.
This piece possesses a complex note pattern that is quite fast. This helps cut him out as an artist who was not only innovative and who wanted to cut out his niche. The piece goes by some rhythmic ditches that are quite fast. This probably depicts Coleman as an artist who plays with lots of attitude and maybe who is sure of what he wants out of a presentation. Coleman and the rest of the instrumentalists methodically pick and alternate as they give each other space to bring out good free jazz. This paints Coleman as a seasoned saxophonist who defined his kind of music and who does present his pieces beautifully.
