A career plan is essential in deciding on how an individual can plan his or her occupation goals and how to achieve them. When setting the goals, they must be clear, concise, and set the duration to reach them.
Major Selection
After finishing my high school education, I was confused on the course to pursue in the University. I received advice from my parents and other friends on the suggestions of the majors I would take, but my mind was later set on doing an engineering course. I shared with my parents about taking a mechanical engineering major, and they accepted.
When growing in my neighborhood, there was a mechanical engineer whom I developed a good understanding with, and he could give me advice on the life issues, some of which my parents had never done. I developed a liking of the guy and most of the things he did in life. In addition, my parents would invite him at home whenever their vehicle had any mechanical problem to receive guidance on what should be done to rectify the issue. I had developed a liking for cars, so whenever the man came to my home, I could spend hours with him checking the vehicle, and in the process, he shared many life and career stories that acted as a motivation in my life. At that time, I had not thought of any particular career in life, until one day he asked me what career I would like to take. My liking for him made me say that engineering was my choice.
The death of my mechanical engineer gave me the motivation to take the course and continue with his legacy. In my high school level, I engaged in mechanical classes that gave further motivation and insight of what the course entails.
After joining the university, I enrolled for a mechanical engineering major, and put all my effort to ensure I succeed in it, though it is technical and challenging. I have a loving for working in the field, rather than staying in the offices because I am social and want to meet and interact with people. Interactions are very useful since they give openings such as better jobs and relationships with people of diverse origin. I feel comfortable during my field practical since there are no limitations on what I can do and how to perform it. In addition, the liking for field activities motivates me to focus on getting a career that will involve traveling and doing projects that are not office-based. My preference is to take part in activities like coordinating engineering projects such as industrial constructions. Working in the construction industry will make me feel to have achieved my career goals, and I will put all my efforts towards its success.
Freshmen Year Experience
In the first year of the university, I was introduced to many course units, but one of the units that have had an impact in my life is CP 101. The unit is wide, and it covers the best ways to improve the study habits for a successful career and the best choice for the future job to take.
The unit-lecturer was very friendly and allowed the class to share their views on what motivates them to do their majors. I listened to my classmates, and their stories on what led them to engineering courses and some of the experiences were challenging because some of my friends were forced by their parents since they felt it is a well-paying career. I was happy for my parents since they gave me a chance to major in a career of my choice.
With the knowledge gained from the unit, I was sure I was in the right major because I have had the love for field activities since my young age. When I combine the lessons, I will learn in the class and the field liking and experiences I have, it will be easy to pursue the major and achieve my set targets. Being successful in a career starts from the early days of a person by determining what appeals to them, allowing them to take a course of their liking, and the ultimate result is evident when an individual enters the job market. A person with a taste for a particular career finds it simpler (Boone, van Olffen and Roijakkers 61-78) to work under any circumstances compared to the one who is there because of a situation such as making money. It is recommended that people should ensure they have a liking for the career to be productive and it helps reduce the rate of employee turnover.
