Should same sex marriage be legalized?
Arguably, same sex marriage remains one of the debatable and controversial issues in the world today. As a matter of fact, there are various reasons that have been raised in support of legalization of same sex marriage. On the other hand, there are various groups that have been opposing the legalization of same sex marriage basing it on ethical and religious issues. Same sex marriage refers to marriage that takes place between two people of same gender identity and biological sex. The legal recognition that exists on issues of same sex marriage is known as the marriage equality. There are logical and realistic reasons in support of same sex marriage. In general perspective, same sex marriage should be legalized.
Marriage is one of the critical institutions in society. This implies that the commitment between two people to get married still remain special, regardless of the changes that has taken place in the world. Marriage enriches the life of people and society; therefore, when marriage takes place the society becomes stronger (Lopez 23). Studies show that same sex marriage still brings people from different families together. Hence, same sex marriage should be legalized based on the concept that it enriches the society. Marriage relationship tends to have stability and longevity since it is based on public and deep personal commitment.
In addition, same sex marriage should be legalized so that it can allow people to enjoy their rights and freedom. Marriage should actually be open to all people regardless of sexuality. In society, many people assert that they are in support of same sex marriage; this means that many people in the mainstream society have accepted same marriage (Mello 37). Since people have accepted same sex marriages, they have tremendously asserted that the law is discriminatory in treating the same marriage differently.
The love and trust that people in same sex marriage have does not harm the society in any way. It is the coming of two people who want to be faithful and compassionate to each other. There are various things and practices that threaten the security and peace of society yet they are legal (Baird 25). There is no need of illegalizing what does not threaten the community or cause any harm. People who get to into same sex marriage know what they want, and it is best to recognize them just like any other people and let them enjoy their life.
The society has always focused on eliminating all the discriminatory issues in the world. It is worth noting that the law and criminal justice systems are in the forefront in ensuring that discrimination does not occur in the world. This is ironical because denying same sex marriages is a form of discriminating the minority in society (Lopez 45). The law should always treat all be equally. This is only achieved through legalization of same sex marriage, and protecting the rights of same sex marriage.
There are various high-risk sexual lifestyles in the world today. This is caused by the fact that people who want to practice their own sex lifestyles are denied by the law. Therefore in order to reduce such risks and strengthen family values then same sex marriage should be legalized.
Same sex marriage should be legalized so that the people practicing same sex marriage have the benefits enjoyed by others. In fact, same sex marriage partners have been sidelined in accessing medical benefits compared to heterosexual partners. Studies show that people in same sex marriage do not get access to medical care benefits, right to inheritance, taxation, as well as protection in case the relationship ends. Legalization of same sex marriage will ensure that those in such relationship enjoy all the benefits that are enjoyed by heterosexual partners.
In most cases, the concept of marriage has been traditionally defined as a relationship between male and female. This sort of definition is inaccurate, and the law should take the centre stage in defining marriage and giving it global view. The constitution protects the right to liberty of all same sex marriages; hence, same sex marriage should be legalized.
There are many orphans in the world today, and the best strategy to reduce this is adoption. Same sex marriage does not bear children, and their main way of having children is through legal adoption. Therefore legalization of same sex marriage will be a solution to global problems faced by children without parents (Mello 56). Legalization of same sex marriage will make it easy for gay marriages to adopt children and provide stable homes for them. In addition, people assert that marriage is for the sake of progression; if this is the case then it implies that those infertile couples should not be allowed to marry. Therefore, the essence of legalizing same sex marriage makes a lot of sense.
On the other hand, those who oppose legalization of same sex marriage have raised a lot of reasons. One of the main reasons is based on the biblical view. The Bible asserts that God created male and female to be together (Baird 23). In addition, same sex marriage violates the natural law and it is morally wrong. Those opposing legalization of marriage asserts that same sex is not marriage since it does not serve the reasons for marriage. Critical analysis shows that legalization of same sex marriage is more realistic and justified; hence, same sex marriage should be legalized.
