The current issue being discussed in the paper is the on-going debate in the US Legislative regarding the immigration bill, which has caused the legislatures to split opinions. The article “Immigration Bill Splitting House G.O.P” was presented in The New York Times on April 4, 2014. The bill was regarding giving a legal status to the immigrants who had come to the United States before the age of fifteen and entered into the military. The decision has divided the Republicans who are going opposite the bill. Jeff Denham, who is the Republican of California, was of the view that it is ‘frustrating to hear controversies from the members who have not served the country and do not understand the impact that the immigrants have on the freedom .’
The Republican of Ohio, John Boehner in order to keep his party divided in the election year and inciting the immigrant and Latino voters who in the midterm elections tend to vote in a low amount, shelved the immigration legislation in February. However, this issue went public and the opponents tried to thwart the Enlist Act, Start Training Act, and Encourage New Legalized Immigrants Act. The immigration bill is really a more sophisticated version of the Dream Act, which provides the young immigrants different opportunities to become a legal member of the United States by enlisting in the army, which would also give them the opportunity to go to college.
According to Mr. Brooks, such kinds of opportunities will create complications for the citizens of America who are trying to get into privileged institutes for their own benefits. He also said that this act would ensure that the other people from other countries are on an equal footing than the citizens of America in their own country . The Republican of Iowa, Steve King also posted on a website that as soon as some immigrant tells that he is unlawfully present in the United States, he will automatically be transferred to a bus taking him back to his own country rather than setting him up for listing in the U.S. military .
The Republican of California said that he would not offer the amendment of the Enlist Act in the committee, while Mr. Denham was of the view that he is expecting that the amendment be presented in the House. This whole division is set to put forward a fight that Mr. Boehner was trying to avoid. Mr. Denham and Mike Coffman are trying their best to push the measures that would take the bill in their favor, as they are the ones who support the Latinos and the minority people in the U.S. Both, the opponents as well as the ones in favor of the bill, have strong backgrounds and have served the country in the military as well .
The republican of Florida stated that everything that issue related to immigration has always been controversial and the debate is still going on whether it has to potential to be added in the bill or not. Mr. Brooks mentioned the eleven million immigrants who were already residing in the country and who were on the way of getting a citizenship due to a statement passed in the Senate, which made some changes in the principles of immigration .
According to the director of America’s Voice, Frank Sharry, the legislatures are in a deep controversy whether to help the minority in the U.S and face the demons of their future which would help them to succeed or not .
