Many people have been arguing about the death penalty for a long time. Some people say it is wrong to kill people or at the same time isolate them in prisons. On the other hand, some people disagree with the death penalty because it does cost the government a lot of money. U.S.A prison system does concentrate in punishment in order to reduce crimes that are committed with an objective of making the country safer than it is at the moment. It is a fact that the prison system in U.S.A will be able to make the country safer by reducing the criminals committing the crimes, but at the same time the American prison should concentrate more on educating prisoners rather than imposing death penalty on them.
In this essay”Hellhole,” Atul Gawande says everyone desires company. Being alone and separated from others can have a massive negative effect on people’s lives. For instance, children need love and support of their parents and other people around them so that they cannot feel isolated in the future. Isolation has many consequences; however, there are several psychological problems involved. Isolation can be much worse for human beings. According to Gawande, panic attacks become common problems for those who are kept in solo confinement for a long time. Gawande stated that the biggest problem with solo confinement is that it makes people ineligible for being in the society once they are released from those confinements. Depression, hopelessness, and despair are some of the effects that often result in such individuals. According to a study discussed by an author in the essay “Hellhole”, supermax prisons failed to decrease the level of violence nature in human beings for the lack of education while in solitude. On the other hand, the results of British persons were highly impressive for they reduced isolation of individuals classified as dangerous to others and offered them opportunities for work, education, and special programs that were meant to increase their social skills. It is shocking to see tens of thousands of American citizens facing such agony in prison yet there is a solution that is yet to be implemented.
Arguably, from Scalia’s arguments on death penalty, I totally agree with the fact that he views capital punishment as immoral although he does not point out his stance clearly. From my perception, I personally disagree with the use of death penalty as a means of punishing. Death penalty is expensive, it does not reduce the pain of the family whose member was murdered, and that it does increases hatred in situations of discrimination. I therefore advocate for the American prisons to concentrate more on education of prisoners rather than imposing death penalty on them which is similar in opinion to AtulGawande view on adopting education.
