The hit Showtime series, Dexter, reveals the insight and thoughts of a serial killer. This show influences the viewer’s opinion of crime being a kind of a science, one that is mastered by Dexter and Prado, but confuses law enforcement. Essentially the show is a chronicle of how criminals and law enforcement often coincide with each other, introducing the idea that law officials are no different than the criminals.
Though the scene begins with Dexter finding out he is going to be a father. In the scene where Dexter shows up at Teegan’s apartment, only to find Freedo there. Dexter ends up murdering him and after he does so, he runs into law enforcement officer, Prado who is clearly aware that he has committed this crime. Prado longed to commit the murder himself. This scene is an example of what the show as a whole suggests about crime and law enforcement. Dexter and Prado are essentially reinforcements of each other, blurring the lines of criminal and officer, as both of them sought to commit the same crime.
In conclusion, Season three’s episode of Dexter illustrated the show’s belief that there are career criminals who are always capable of outsmarting law enforcement. The episode also highlights corruption within the police department and detectives. In essence the show reveals that the law actually has very little power to control crime when they are guilty of participating in it themselves. This theme is reiterated in society where we see corruption played out daily.
