It is said that the external environmental has a profound impact on the thinking and analytical procedure of a human being. Human beings live their lives on the basis of experiences that collect together to form memories. One such emotional experience for me is my view of the external facilities at my university college. My first unofficial visit to ABC University was a great and exciting experience. As I entered the building of an international university for the first time, I saw groups of students interacting with each other in the hall, some discussing education while others engrossed in gossips. Some professors were passing by and interacting with students to clear their doubts and questions while other students stood as mere spectators in the lobby. The noise of the students together with the faculty alternating with periods of silence was a unique experience. Especially when I did not understand the language quite well being an international student, it just seemed to me like a loud music being turned on and off periodically. I did make an attempt to understand the language, but all effort in vain. I had to make consistent efforts to work on my communication skills. It was a lesson that I had learnt on the very first day of my visit to a new college.
The building was a huge structure painted in white and made of stones that added to its unique architectural beauty. There were plenty of rooms in the building that included common rooms, computer rooms, class rooms and hall ways. The passage to each room whether it was a common room, a computer lab or a laboratory, was well defined. The floor of the entire building was so clean and transparent that I became jealous with the cleanliness of the area as my old education area was not that clean. There was no room for any dirt and garbage, and the university had strict norms to punish the offenders who would try to pollute the environment. The area was continuously monitored with the help of closed circuit cameras that did a live recording of the various activities held at the university and were closely monitored at the Dean’s office. An information about electrical surveillance was available through various messages posted on the university walls in each region.
The dorm was not an actual library with a lot of books to read, but students had the facility to sit there in groups with their books and notes to interact with each other and learn together. Students were often seen exchanging notes with each other and discussing important academic concepts. When the lecture time would start, the students would rush to their lecture halls and be seated quietly so as to attend to the lectures quietly and grasp the important academic concepts taught be leading faculty specialized in the various fields of education.
The various fields of education at the institution were represented in a diagrammatical format so that the students who were enthusiastic about taking admission in the university had a fair idea about the various courses taught at the university and the existing students could also develop knowledge about what other courses were being taught in the university. Each course in the diagram had its duration, eligibility, faculty and training information listed on the notice board separately.
Notice board, how did I miss this important component. While e-notices took over the traditional paper pin boards clearly, there were still important notices posted on the university notice board that required immediate attention. Important information such as holiday calendar, fee and exam schedule were also posted on the university notice board in addition to being posted online.
The exteriors of the building were as maintained as the interiors. There were plenty of flowering plants on the sides of the passage to the university lobby. All kinds of trees were planted inside the university garden area that boasted of various varieties of plants that offered room for botanical sciences and also provided fresh oxygenated air to the university. The university essentially had a green area that was spread over a large space and had grass, rocks, birds and flowers each adding to the scenic beauty. It was common for students to sit in the bright sun after lectures and enjoy a tight nap that refreshed them after a long lecture. Groups of students were seen collecting specimens of plants and animals for botanical and zoological studies. Many experiments in the field of ecology and zoology were often conducted in the university gardens. The hopping of butterflies from one flower to another was a common scene in the garden. Beautiful butterflies with colorful wings and varied sizes could be seen in the university gardens. The silence of the gardens was often broken by the loud noise of the Cuckoo and other birds that chirped throughout the day time inside their nests planted high on the trees.
All these external and internal structural beauties of the university gave me a lot of happiness and satisfaction that I would be at a home away from my home. The first and the most important thing that students miss about their home is a home cooked food. In my case too, it was home made French toasts that my mother made for me. On entering the food hall of the university, I was mesmerized with the sweet smell of the international cuisines that the university staff prepared especially for the international students. The food looked great and appealing to my eyes, and a lot of my favorite dishes were available. What was great about the area was that it was a self-service and the payment system was token based. The rates of most dishes were subsidized for the students, and the authorities ensured that students don’t have to pay too much for their food requirements. My eyes stuck on the notice in black and white that read, “students interested in taking monthly food coupons are welcome to enroll themselves at subsidized monthly rates.” I sincerely thank the university authorities to this day as it is only because of the customized good menu; I have been able to live happily without missing meals in a new environment.
It was time to rush to the hostel facilities and time for some rest. My entry into the hostel facilities was only possible after I took formal admission, and I still recall that day when I first entered the hostel facilities. Unalike hostels that are ill-maintained and do not have a modern hotel like facilities for the students, the hostel facilities of the university were well planned. Each student had a private bathroom, and it was left on the students if they wanted to share a room or have an independent room. The single rooms were naturally higher charged in comparison to the sharing based rooms. The university principles of cleanliness and hygiene were clearly implemented in the hostel area as well that looked no less than a hotel in terms of its shine and interiors.
Living in a university hostel is just like living at home. I have my hostel family that involves my roommate, neighbors and a supportive hostel warden. My hostel roommates are my emotional support, and they are always there to help me in times of need and motivate me to perform higher. Whether it is a birthday celebration of a hostel mate or a mid-term examination, the hostel mates are always united to celebrate and live the occasion. It is common to see different designs of coffee mugs placed in the hostel kitchen facility where the student entry is quite frequent. Preparation of coffee is a common practice to boost the caffeine inside the body to stay awake for longer time at late night. The huge can of water filter inside the hostel lobby is also a characteristic feature.
Overall, the stay of an international student at a foreign university brings along with it, unique challenges and opportunities. With the help of a supportive faculty and class mates at the academic institution, the life of foreign students can be made much easier. The clean and hygienic external and internal environment of the university has a positive and constructive impact on the student mind that stimulates better thought processes and procedures.
