In various parts across the world, people have had different perspectives concerning wars, uprisings and rebellions since civilization of man and the formation of centralized forms of governance. This is because in many regions they have been seen to change situations within an administrative system when peaceful negotiations fail to bear fruits. However, from a critical observation of wars across the world and over long periods of time, it is evident that they have both positive and negative impacts in various sectors of the society, including the social, political and economical set-up of that particular society. This assignment therefore seeks to analyze some of these effects based on actual cases that have been noted in various parts of the world, and by the end of this assignment, it will be possible to establish the effects that wars have in the societies we live in, and whether they are worth consideration as a way to express grievances through physical, forceful and violent expression or not. From a societal analysis, it is clear that the society is facing the problem of wars, and the se are not only political but also social, religious and economical. This assignment seeks to establish these societal problems and how they can be resolved.
According to Paul Achter, people have different perceptions towards war, and the approach towards physical expression of disgruntled feeling can be traced from two perspectives. According to research conducted by various political, social and economical analysts, unlike in the mid modern times for example in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when administrative systems preferred war as a way to win over their competitors, wars in the modern are more preferred by the younger generations, while the older generations prefer peaceful mediation or arbitration, and will only opt out for war in case peaceful negotiations fail to achieve their desired goal. This according to various interviews and opinions conducted from people across different age brackets has been traced to be as a result of their experience with war and the effects that they have seen in various parts of a society’s make-up (Achter, 2010, p. 48).
In the early modern times, various wars have positive impacts in the societies. As much as they left a lot of bloodshed from both civilians and the participating soldiers, various wars and most notably the Irish war, the French Napoleon War both of the late eighteenth century as well as the World wars I and II had diverse effects to the regions in which they were fought. In Wolf and Connors’ view for example, as much as they brought liberation to these regions from oppressive rules (for example the Irish war which liberated Ireland from the English rule and political manipulation and oppression), it is evident that they left far worse effects in these region compared to the political and economic liberation that they brought to their respective regions (Wolf & Connors, 2009, p. 115).
Effects of war have also been noted in the modern society in which we live. To start with, it is important to note that unlike in the earlier days especially in the eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries when war was usually defined, for example political, social, economical or religious wars. In the current societies however, it is difficult to cut out the reasons for a specific war because every time a certain region is faced by this vice, almost all the above specified factors are involved and affected in one way or another in the society. An example of these scenarios in the modern society includes the Iraq-American War. Initially, this war started as a political war after the September Eleventh bomb attack in the United States. Over time however, various other areas of the Iraqi set up were also affected, and these included the country’s economical, social and even religious make up (Reddy, et.al, 2011, p. 517).
With the hope to achieve peace and a centralized and just form of governance in the country, the consequences of the war on the contrary were increased feud not only between the two countries, but also between the United States and the Middle East states. Some of the destructions that took place in the country might take a very long period to stabilize. However, according to social analysts from Oxford University, the ruined diplomatic and social relations not only between the two countries but also between people from these ethnic and racial backgrounds may take over six decades to heal, and in fact this will only be possible if the quality of leadership between these two countries is changed and improved. This is one of the major disadvantages about these wars, and one of the major reasons why I strongly stand against war but in stead prefer negotiations as the appropriate way to reach agreements (Achter, 2010, p.56).
Another important thing to note about wars according to Douglas J. Burks is the fact that the people who are mostly involved and consequently affected by wars are the students. Students especially those in tertiary levels of their education are normally used by the influencing political figures in the society to openly demonstrate against various political, social and economical reasons, and in many instances these demonstrations lead to wars in the society. These young people in the society are affected in various ways. For example, their education is compromised since they cannot be involved in demonstrations and at the same time have quality time for their studies (Burks, 2010, p. 180).
In conclusion, backed by the above made observations as and most particularly Wolf and Connors’ outlook towards war, it is evident that although wars (political, economical, social and religious) may eventually achieve the participants’ desired goal, it has been noted that they have other major effects to the society which in the end compromise various societal make up, which eventually makes these wars not worth an option. Some of the effects that major wars such as World wars I & II had in the global political, social and economical set up are still felt to date. For this reason therefore, it is better for people to try other forms of expressions when pressured or disgruntled, leaving wars out of option. Peaceful methods such as mediation, arbitration and contracts have been used especially in the twenty first century and worked (Wolf & Connors, 2009, p. 114). The society should hence work towards social change by embracing more peaceful means of achieving a certain goal without necessarily having to involve violence and war. This in fact does not only harmonize the people but also promotes togetherness and cohesion in the society (Robertson, 2010, p. 67).
