For any organization whether it is small, medium or large, employee’s productivity is very imperative as it affect the overall performance of organization. There are various factors which are directly related with employee’s productivity like employee’s motivation, healthy organizational environment, fair treatment, and fair appraisal process. Employee’s health and wellbeing is also one of the major factors which contribute towards productivity of an employee.
Research study done on the subject shows, a healthy employee can produce three times higher results than an unhealthy employee. Unwell person utilize all sick leaves whereas a healthy person take less leaves. An ill person is equal to an extra expenditure for the organization.
For any organization it is very essential to keep its employees healthy and motivated. Two reasons why organization should implement any health and wellbeing related drives are: 1. to protect health, safety and welfare of its employees, this will also minimize the threat of health hazard. 2. It will help in increasing productivity and reducing absenteeism. It will send a message to all employees that organization is highly concerned about their health and wellbeing. This will help in retention and talent attraction.
Organization should first identify the need of its staff with regard to health and wellbeing. Then it should formulate strategy and setup certain processes focusing on to fulfill identified needs, by which employee can have better control over his or her health and wellbeing.
Purpose: vision, mission, objectives, and results of the organization.
Means: management system, performance system, communication flow, operating processes, reposting structure, policies and procedures.
Relations: leadership style, management behavior, employee behavior, and management practices.
Meaning: culture of organization which provide values and norms, outlook, assumptions.
These all four elements work together and perform to achieve the organization goal. While performing, two types of thoughts get generated in the system. One is whole system thought, which focus on improving communication which affects organization performance and employee health and well being and productivity. Another is management thought which focuses on policies, procedures, financial targets, operating system, financial system etc.
While working in multiple layers following things could happen; change in roles and responsibilities, change in accountability, change in attitudes of manager and supervisors and problems may arise at various levels of organization system. All the problem factors lead to lesser productivity and motivation.
Social wellbeing: employee should get a fair treatment. There should not be any discrimination related to gender, cast, race, region and religion.
Physical wellbeing: employee should be protected from potential health hazards; he is exposed to in working environment. Organization may arrange some programs giving information about various deceases, healthy diets and healthy life style.
Mental wellbeing: high work pressure, unhealthy environment and miss behavior of seniors is harmful for mental health of employee. Organization should have policy about values and ethics required to be followed at work place. Organization can also arrange some workshops and development programs focusing on how to deal with certain situations, how to manage stress etc.
Overall employee’s health and wellbeing is a very important factor for an organization as it impacts the overall performance of organization. If employees are happy and satisfied, they can do wonders by achieving more than the targets set for them.
