Ethics attributes to the codes of conduct that govern a particular institution or society. They are behavioral aspects expected of an individual or organization by the society and this may significantly differ from one firm to another basing on their corporate culture, nature of the business and area of operation. This branch of philosophy essentially dictates what is to be considered right or wrong conduct in as far as societal morals are concerned.
On the other hand Robinson-Patman Act is a federal law that works to control the activities of market players and producers in the industry. The act essentially works to mitigate unhealthy price competition and price discrimination. The Act works to control prices of goods so as to create a level play field for all industry players and give opportunity to all players to have a share of the market. Traders who violated the stipulated law are subjected to criminal penalties.
The differences between ethics and Robinson-Patman Act is that ethics is very dynamic and may differ from one institution to another depending on the values that they uphold and morals of the society in the area of operation. In essence, ethics are divergent depending on a number of other factors that come into play. On the flip side, Robinson-Patman Act is very specific as clearly stipulated law that has guidelines with which businesses and corporate organizations in the United States ought to abide by. This law has been enacted to section two of the Clayton Act aimed at specifically managing price discrimination practices.
The core objective of business ethics is to streamline the operations of an organization in tandem with socially acceptable codes of conduct-dictated by particular society. It works to ensure that the business engages in morally acceptable activities that do not compromise the codes of conduct as expected of it by the society; in their area of operation. On the other hand, Robinson-Patman Act was enacted with the core objective of controlling prices and protecting small businesses from the activities of large firms with stable financial muscles that can survive with low prices on their commodities. The Act works to regulate such price discriminations and give small retailers and new market entrants a lifeline in the industry through enactment of fair pricing practices.
Ethics and Robinson-Patman Act however share the same working principle of controlling the activities of business corporations within a define area of operation. They dictate the mode of operations and provide guidelines that businesses are obligated to follow for a successful venture in the industry.
