Teaching is bestowed by professors, learning is returned by students. Sometimes it becomes a two-way street that interchanges. However, one thing usually sets apart teacher from pupil, it’s the role of educators in weighing a learner’s performance to a grade. It is collected from the different outputs and participation in class. Examinations and homework constitute a significant bulk in student evaluation.
A take home task creates an extension of schooling. It is a common opinion that a child is less than pleased to do additional load at home. However, this supplemental tool enhances problem-solving skills. An article by a nationally certified school psychologist, discussed about a research involving 100 cases concerning benefits of an assigned work to students. The results proved that assignments during high school showed significant yield than that of elementary years (Dawson, 2014). This is most probably because a person matures to obligations throughout life. This can safely assert that the older someone gets, the easier it is to communicate the responsibilities that must be assumed. Thus, universities adopt the system of delegating school-related home chores as part of the curriculum.
Based on my understanding, I describe traditional exams as an independent task of answering time-sensitive items within a class period. It is a direct inquiry of knowledge retained from a tackled subject. This provides a clean-cut view of the progress made by way of scored answers from undisclosed prepared questions. It also promotes a healthy habit of mind preparation before test-taking amongst university undergraduates.
Homework presents the ideal phase in terms of pre as well as post-lecture immersion. It offers deadlines which gives a person the opportunity in improving time-management skills. This is especially beneficial when it gives the chance and motivation to make up for misgivings during class hours. As opposed to a conventional examination, homework can be a way to exchange ideas and extend for permissible assistance among members of the family. It establishes a great way to gather information and delve on academic dissertations widely accessible at the library. Though, it can also develop deceitful actions as in the case of internet copy-paste modus. In United Kingdom, it was reported that sixty-two percent of its student population complains of excessive schoolwork (News.bbc.co.uk, 2014). This sheds light to the temptations brought about by the absence of superiors during completion of a project.
Meanwhile, a standard test adheres to strict disciplines of supervision. It also enables assessment of one’s ability and aptitude to comprehend (Oxford dictionaries, 2014). It validates authenticity of submitted papers finished at home. It compromises for the leniency and possible unoriginality of a coursework. This gives a solid basis for fair recording of marks. It contributes an indispensible percentage in a grading scheme. However, conventional examinations are far from being the perfect method of rating. How it is prepared plays an essential part in every question paper distributed. It is impertinent to deliver proper way of constructing non-biased set of questionnaires. This ensures an accurate degree of difficulty and fair judgment.
While examinations and homework are different sides of a coin, they both give the equipment to review academic advancement. They augment each other in dealing and correcting each owns’ shortcomings by functioning side by side. It benefits a student by way of a holistic approach that bodes a character after college.
