Family strength is one of the core concepts in food and consumer science. The concept concerns itself with nurturing strong families. To achieve this, there is the need to understand the complexity of human developments and relationships. The family is a fundamental unit in the society which ought to be protected. Understanding the family as a social unit and enabling individuals to meet their basic needs is a top priority (CFCS, 2010). Family strengths are determined by the resilience of the family in spite of the family structure. Interactions between family members and with other families also determine the strength of a family. Families need to apply strategies which enable them to cope with various events in their daily routines. Families and individuals often combine resources to ensure that their families can cope with life. With time, families develop protective and recovery tools. These mechanisms enable family members to deal with stressors and transitions. Family strengths include hope, strength, spirituality, health, social support, problem-solving strategies, equality, honesty and family time among others (CFCS, 2010).
One of the key concepts advocated by FCS Body of Knowledge is material well-being which is inclusive of food. Additionally, this body of knowledge advocates for wellness in health or bodily well-being, and that is where nutrition comes in. For a society to be healthy and well physically, what it consumes must be healthy and nutritious. The role of nutritional experts in the society would thus be to ensure that the public is sensitized on what foods should be consumed by varied age groups, in what quantities and with what regularity. Additionally, the public ought to be aware of the foods that should be avoided, especially those associated with causing lifestyle illnesses.
