Writing is a beautiful art and can be used beautifully to express one’s self. It doesn’t matter if you want to write professionally or just for your interest. There are simple steps and ways that can immensely enhance your writing skills and given your writing the boost it needs. There are several things that experts have found helpful in becoming a better writer.
The most important step is to read more if you want to write better. Reading increases the vocabulary and subconsciously tells the mind what the different writing styles are. This way when you start writing, you unintentionally follow a professional pattern and style.
Writing is not a step to step process that can be learned in a day. It is a process that needs to be practiced to excel at. However, experts do agree that there are five steps in which the writer shuffles about. Most writers need to move back and forth from these different steps in order to create the perfect masterpiece.
- Brainstorming
- Outlining
- Drafting
- Revising
- Editing
Brainstorming is the process of jotting down your thoughts and ideas. It is not important at the time that the ideas need to be organized. Any thought that comes to mind needs to be put into paper. This is a pre-writing practice that leads you to become a better writer. Once you have all your ideas and thoughts gathered on a sheet of paper, then it is simpler to organize them. This organizing can be in the form of an outline, tree or map. These steps will help ensure that your writing is in flow and you do not jump to different sections.
Another important tool that you can use to become a better writer is to use transition words in your writing. Transition words are a very important part of any essay. It shows the relationship among ideas, sentences and paragraphs. They add coherency to your writing. Transition words give your writing a professional look. They make even the simplest sentences professional and complex. Words like ‘alternatively’, ‘regardless’, ‘in contrast’, ‘indeed’ and many more are a few examples of transition words that can easily be fitted in any writing.
This is the beauty of the use of transition words. They are very simple to use and make a huge impact on the overall writing structure. However, the ease of use of transition words may also lead a writer to overuse them. Even though there are no limits on the number of transition words a writer can use in an essay, a balance should be maintained. The use of too many transition words may cause your writing to become weighty.
My experience shows that to become a better writer, you need to become a better reader. I have learned from my readings and tried to incorporate the different styles and words I learned. I also read articles and things that I do not find interesting and analyze why I do not find it interesting. I have learned to differentiate good writing from bad writing not based on topic but on the writing style itself.
No matter how bad or less you write, WRITE! Practice makes you perfect. This applies to writing as well. Do not procrastinate on writing. Even if they are a few short lines, or a whole novel, you should write daily. By following these few simple steps, you can help yourself become a better writer.
