My writing has been influenced through the works of other people who have shaped my understanding of the literary devices and styles that constitute to good writing. I have studied a significant number of poets and writers who have made substantial contributions to the art of writing. For instance, the works of Shakespeare, Dubois and Caesar have had an impact on my understanding of using various themes and devices to make my points in writing. For example, Shakespeare used a particular style of writing to make his plays interesting and educative. He greatly contributed to aspects of language that make it fascinating. In most of his works, he employed imagery, personification and symbolism to make his points. By reading his plays, I have gained knowledge on metaphoric language and its influence on the audience. Such language reduces the monotony of plain English and maintains the concentration of the reader who remains enthusiastic on understanding the text. Like Aristotle suggested, the use of plain text in a language subjects the reader into a monotony that they can be spared if the writer employs the use of the methods rhetoric persuasion to make his points. Such persuasion includes the use of ethos, pathos and logos.
Through such philosophers, I have learnt the ways in which I can use rhetoric to facilitate the persuasion of an audience. The most fundamental rule in writing, as I have come to learn, is to convey your point in a manner that will convince your audience of your thesis. To do this, one needs to choose his words with diction and prose. The manner in which we write can have an impact on the reader if the right tools of literature are employed. Therefore, I avidly dedicate myself to word choice that is specific and would convey a meaning with precision. When I started reading about literary devices, I could not understand what they meant and failed on various attempts to employ them in my writing. However, with time, through the works of people like W.E.B Dubois, my writing grew. I have also noted overtime that one cannot become a good writer without becoming a dedicated reader first. The two are like twins who possess the same traits. Reading helps an individual become a good writer, and writing shapes the reading skills one possesses. The two intertwine and influence one another. I, therefore, realized that I needed to become a religious reader for my writing skills to take shape. In addition, I have noted that reading has helped my creativity and imagination. I have encountered many stories that have had an impact on how creative I have become. Creativity is an imperative trait in writing.
Being literate has had major influences in my life. For instance, I derive satisfaction from influencing people through my writing. An example is when a friend in school once told me, “I like your poem; I have never thought of love in that angle.” She said so after I wrote a poem as a gift for a friend’s birthday. The most legendary writers employed good writing so that they could influence the society to think critically about different issues. For instance, writers of the beat generation such as Allen Ginsberg wrote to influence people’s thinking. I would like to believe that my being literate will have the same impact on the people around me. Additionally, being able to read and write has given me insight into a new perspective of reasoning that I would not have possessed had I been illiterate. I look at the world in a critically different way that makes more sense than it did before. Reading is not everyone’s cup of tea. I was one of those people who could not turn the page of a book. However, after reading an interesting short story, “A gift for my mother,” I was fascinated and realized how interesting reading was. From then on, I have read many books, not only in literature, but other topics that have made me aware of subjects I did not know before.
