A soliloquy is defined as a portion in which characters are involved in talking to themselves without directly speaking to the audience. This have well been used in the play by Shakespeare in most his books to reveal more about the character. In the book Macbeth soliloquy is used to relate the character and their true emotions which make it easier to relate it to the audience. The most forceful example is Macbeth’s dialogue with the phantom dagger, here the ‘heat oppressed brain’ created by the power of imagination. The dagger is more than a mere recipient of a speech; it has become a fearful partner in a process of struggle, hesitation and final resolution. This terrible and compelling picture of receding, bleeding dagger is not palpable but is indeed of false creation.
In the very beginning Macbeth appears predestined for monologic speech; in his first asides during the encounter with the witches is not information worth for the audience. The utterances are called forth as utterances prompted by disposition for sudden absorption which his partner Banquo early observes in him. There is imperceptible transition from the asides to the longer asides. This is seen in the seventh seen when he enters for his first long soliloquy ‘if it were done when ‘tis done’; this shows self reflection which combines visionary imagination and suffering obsession with lucid awareness of his criminal purpose.
In this monologue he refers to time, then now, the life to come, through this monologue Macbeth exhibits both resentment and guilt for the crime in which he now refers to as deed which is a transition from using ‘it’ to describe the crime. His emotions are well depicted and well revealed in this monologue where confusion looms inside his thoughts. In Macbeths and lady Macbeths soliloquies the powers of evil and the powers of good assume shape, they become realities and appear before our minds eyes.
The power of soliloquies in the plays reveals more of the character to the audience. In this soliloquy the audience is able to describe the character as good or as evil. The characters of both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are revealed on how they relate to each other. This is shown when they receive the letter of the witches prophesy and how both characters evaluate it. Macbeth’s character is now well defined and shows the kind of influence he has over Lady Macbeth.
The insertion of soliloquies in Macbeth led audience to important information that may not be seen in the rest of the play. After they received the prophecy from the witches the character revealed by Macbeth during the soliloquy shows one of remorse. Some of the characteristics shown from the monologues include love, hatred, revenge and remorsefulness. These emotions are exhibited at the end of the play as he establishes his feelings showing a softer side of him. It is important as so much is hidden within the context for this to be revealed within the play. It is through this that the audience is able to identify well with the character as a person. Emotions depicted in the monologues make a lot of difference as it helps to differentiate the inner conscience and the personality in the play. They help the audience to relate to the characters more deeply through the onset of happenings in the inner self.
