Capital punishment is one of the most debatable issues all over the world. Time and time again the question arises as to whether or not death sentence should be given out to a human being who has committed the horrible crime of murdering a fellow human being. There have been several arguments that actually support the death penalty both from a moral and logical point of view.
The very base of the death penalty is to send out a strong message to criminals out in the world and to deter them from performing a similar crime. Thus giving death penalty to one person actually helps in saving the life of several innocent people in the future who could otherwise be attacked. Without this kind of moral policing, it is hard to control some societies where a mere life imprisonment is not enough.
The second biggest reason for giving the death penalty is more from a financial point of view. The mere cost of maintaining a criminal with life sentence in a prison is so high that one wonders what the use is of spending tax payer’s money on such an inhuman person. This money could be better utilized in serving the truly deserving people. While a person in prison can enjoy three meals a day, a roof to live under and decent sanitation facilities, there are millions more in rightful need of such basic necessities.
Death penalty has also been observed to be a cultural phenomenon. European countries in general never give out capital punishments. Countries like the USA and India have very rare cases while countries like China and Iran have the highest number of people who are given the death penalty. In countries where the government uses this as a tool to suppress people, death penalty has been very badly misused. It might even force people to do more wrong.
If a person is given the death penalty by mistake, then there is no reversing the process. Thus this judgment must be reserved for extreme cases where the crime deserves it and where thorough investigations have been performed.
