When I got on the plane to leave Saudi Arabia, I already knew what I was going to miss the most: my family and my soccer team Al-Khaleej. I would also miss the ocean, my friends, and my favorite coffee shop; but these are all sacrifices I was willing to make. I was also extremely excited to further my education abroad, because I want to make sure I have excellent career opportunities when I return. There is a lot of competition for jobs in Saudi Arabia, and many industries are growing, and right now I have so much to learn and experience. I also have many people who support me, and have encouraged me along the way. They give me the energy I need to cope with the changes and obstacles I face everyday. My life changes very quickly, with new challenges all the time, however the people in my life are always there for me.
I am from Saihat, which is located on the east coast of Saudi Arabia, on the Persian Gulf, and is a small city with around 100,000 people. It is a nice city, with culture and a number of excellent restaurants. The ocean is beautiful, and I am going to miss my friends, and little things like the coffee shop I used to hang out and study at. Everyone there knew each other and it is hard being in a new community where I do not know so many people. However, there are many Saudi students here, and everyone is very friendly. Intellectually, this is the place I need to be right now.
Most of all I will miss my lovely family. I’m sure every student studying abroad says this, but I have a very close family. I miss spending time with them. My parents have fully supported my decision to study abroad, and have encouraged me every step of the way. We talk everyday, and they are proud that I am taking my academic studies, and professional development seriously. My mother has already sent me a care package with my favorite foods and ‘‘Al-Qahwa’’or Saudi coffee, that is very lightly roasted and blended with cardamom. It is serve with dates, and I plan to serve it to new friends when they visit.
I have to admit that I am addicted to video games, and never get bored with them. I have been married for three months, and my wife is beautiful and kind enough to both support my career goals and tolerate my gaming. There is an active gaming culture here and I am looking forward to making friends who are also serious players. However, academics always comes first; I received a scholarship and have responsibilities I never neglect. I have good role models academically and professionally. My father is very hard working and successful, and my brother has been studying and working in Australia for three years, and is someone who motivated and encouraged me to follow my own dreams and forge a path by studying abroad. My wife is also extremely supportive of my goals, and for having the privilege of having these people in my life, I am very lucky.
It may be challenging, but studying abroad is also a unique opportunity. Before I left, my father gave me some valuable advice that I am already using. He told that “if you are going to travel half way across the world, and be away from your family, it only makes sense to work as hard as possible and get the most out if.” It may be hard work, but he was also taking about other social and cultural opportunities. It is also fun to travel and experience new culture. I am very interested in developing my English writing skills, because it is an essential component of my career path. I am here to pursue my education, learn about other cultures and interact with people from all over the world. The Saudi students here have been helpful, advising me on simple things. I am looking to join a local soccer club. Some language students here want to practice their Arabic with me, I just want to practice my video games, but I do not mind, it is a wonderful experience.
