Four Elements in the Nonprofit
Nonprofits are organizations just like any other, and they require structures and systems so that they can operate smoothly. A successful nonprofit organization is one that understands and manages its processes and operations. As such, there are four elements that can be identified in a nonprofit organization. These include the mission, the management process, the strategic plan, and the fundraising structure. For a successful nonprofit organization, ideal relationships need to exist between these four elements. First, the purpose of the organization has to be determined. This involves developing the first element which is the mission. The mission statement describes or explains the reason for the existence of the nonprofit.
In order for the mission to be achieved, the organization needs to have an effective management process. This involves people who are tasked with the organization’s decision-making process. These mainly include the Board of Directors, as well as the CEO and staff. The management needs to set clear vision and goals for the organization that are aimed at furthering the mission. According to Perrone (2009), when the management is ineffective, the organization will struggle and falter in achieving its mission. Leaders in management positions need to act as champions and role models for other members of staff.
The organization’s strategic plan revolves around the management process and the mission. For a strategic plan to be adopted, decisions have to be made by the board members as well as other top ranking staff members in the organization. At the same time, any strategic plan devised or adopted should be aligned with the mission, and should aim at achieving the set goals and objectives. Finally, the fundraising structure needs to be extremely effective in raising funds so as to fund any strategic plans that the organization might have. The mission statement should be able to attract others to work with the organization. These include members, volunteers and donors. This also involves the making of decisions during the management process.
