My front window faces the street that I live on. It’s an old street with a very narrow sidewalk. Many of the houses on this street are over one hundred years old. Then there are others that were built in the 1950s and 1960s. It’s a short street, with only 42 houses on it and it being only one block long. This is unusual, as most streets start up and either carry on for miles, or start up and stop and begin again. The houses on my street are well maintained with a few exceptions. I would estimate that over three quarters of the houses own dogs. Not big hearty dogs that are for protection, but rather, small, squeaky, yappy dogs that bark when a leaf blows across the street. You can always tell when someone is walking down the street, as the dogs at that end begin yapping and the other dogs join in depending upon how far down the street the person walks. Needless to say, if the person walks down the entire street, the chorus of dogs will grow in participation and pitch. There are mainly families that reside on my street.
As I sit and look out my front window, I see a few children walking home from school. The little ones walk with their parents. In some cases, holding hands and it looks like they are discussing the child’s day at school. In other instances, the small child runs ahead of the parent, eager to get home to their toys, video games, or television shows.
Then about fifteen minutes later, a lone teenage boy walks by. He is dressed very Goth, with a black denim jacket with the sleeves ripped off. Under the jacket, he wears a black hoodie, which is extra-large for his small frame and the hoodie hangs out way below his jacket, reaching almost to his knees. His hair is dyed jet black.
While he does not wear Goth makeup, he does have piercings, in his nose, his ears, his lower lip and one eyebrow. The piercing in his nose displays a large ring with two larger balls built into it. He looks like a very thin, young bull whose skin is too loose for his body. In his ears he has large spacers that I just know are going to leave huge holes in his ear lobes in years to come. At the tops of his ears, he has about 6 small hoop style piercings and from one of the hoops, hangs a chain that also connects onto his nose ring. In his lower lip and eyebrow, he has similar hoops as those in the top of his ear. He stands out because there are not too many teenagers on this street.
Fifteen minutes later, a car drives down the street and parks near the end of the street. It must be someone coming home from work. A lady gets out of the car. She is dressed in dark blue slacks and a matching blazer, with a white blouse under her blazer. She goes to the back of her car and opens the trunk. She then reaches inside for what seems like countless bags of groceries and heads into a house with a brick façade. Apparently, she is not into saving the environment, because she did not bring her own bags, but paid for cheap, plastic store bags instead.
About 20 minutes later across the street, a middle aged woman comes out and begins raking her grass. She has dyed blonde hair. She wears tight blue jeans, a spandex low cut top, and a snug fitting sweater that is open in the front. She bends stiffly with each pull on her rake. Her appearance not matching what her muscles and body is saying. She feels every pull on that rake. Someone opens the front door and lets two yappy little dogs out. She frowns, turns to talk to the person inside the door, and shouts at him in a foreign language. He calls the dogs back to the house and she takes her rake back up to the house and goes into the house.
My street is a hub of activity. Here there are lots of different kinds of people doing different kinds of things. To watch from the front window as others just go about their business is like glimpsing the world from their perspectives. This was an exceptionally interesting experience.
