Explain how resource leveling should be accomplished by a project organization that has severalprojects underway simultaneously. Analyze what key performance metrics such an organization would use to assess the worth of proposed leveling schemes.
It is highly important for the organization to resource level simultaneous projects to successfully complete each one of them on time. Following are those resource leveling methods that will help in accomplishing several projects underway:
- The project managers need to list down the tasks of each project by writing the activity which require the smallest amount of time first and then writing the activity which requires the largest amount of time in the last. Afterwards, the activities requiring smallest amount of time need to be get ridden of fast so that activities requiring the largest amount of time can have better focus. For example, if task A requires 5 days to complete and task B requires 3 days to complete then task B should be completed first and then task A should be completed.
- First the project managers need to focus on giving resources to the tasks of the projects that have the smallest slack and then attend the tasks with the largest slack so that deadlines are met and no project exceeds its limited amount of time allotted. For example, if task A has 10 days of slack and task B has 15 days of slack then task A should be given the resources first and then task B should be given the resources.
- Find out the task that needs the highest amount of resources and then allocate it resources first. Later on, attend the task requiring the lowest amount of resources. This will help in achieving efficient results from the projects. For example, if task A requires 20 people and 10 machines while task B requires 10 people and 5 machines then task A should be given the resources first.
- Check the tasks in the WBS sequence. Afterwards, assign the resources first to those tasks that are first in the sequences. Afterwards, locate the resources to those tasks that are listed later on in the sequences. For example, if task A has to start on day 1 and task B has to start on day 2 then task A will be given the resources before task B.
- Find out the activities that have the largest number of consequent activities and then assign those activities resources foremost. This method will help in saving a lot of time that has the chances of getting wasted in doing the consequent tasks that occur in every project activity. For example, if activity A has 5 subsequent tasks while activity B has 7 subsequent tasks then activity A will be assigned the resources first and then activity B will be attended.
