Vocabularies
One of the ongoing American political events is the primary elections in states. Open primary elections are held within political parties to select a presidential candidate in the upcoming presidential election. A political party is a group of people with same goals which come together with the aim of winning an election and control of the government. This allows the people to choose their political affiliations. In America, they will choose either Republicans or Democrats; these are the two main political parties. Currently, the state of Mississippi is facing a runoff election between two presidential candidates. A runoff election is a second round of an election that features two political parties that received the largest percentages of votes in an election. A runoff election happens when the two running candidates did not get the required percentages of the vote needed to win an election, this is known as plurality. In an election, every candidate needs 50.1% of votes to declare a winner in an election. During elections, candidates want to gain the trusts and loyalty of followers. Most of these candidates use patronage by giving jobs or contracts to people to build loyal followers. Many of these contracts or jobs are given the elite; people who have higher social statuses and influence. The elite control this country, there are known as the 1%.
Recently there have been some attacks on Hillary Clinton about not being the ideal candidate to run for presidential elections. These were negative or attack advertisement on Hillary Clinton to expose her weaknesses to the public. Mrs. Clinton has faced many criticisms as female running for a presidential office. The American society is a male dominated society, and for some people, it would be a worst nightmare that a female Democrat might become president. This also touches base on the gender gap in the United States. Gender gap is the differences between men and women in political, economic, intellectual and other aspects. Gender gaps in societies differentiate women and men in these categories to make one more superior over the other. The attack advertisement on Mrs. Clinton shows that men are more superior to women. The attack on Mrs. Clinton is to prove that women are weak physically and emotionally in our societies. If Mrs. Clinton should run for presidential elections in 2016, there will be a high possibility that many women will take part in the elections. This will also encourage women to run for offices and cut the gender gap in the country. Gender gap also creates a political ideology between men and women. In the United States, men have different worldview as compared to women.
Another ongoing issue is the divided government in the U.S. The democrats control the white house and the Republicans control the legislature. This has made it quite difficult for decision-making because the legislature is the law making body of the government. According to President Obama, this makes carrying out executive duties difficult if congress cannot act on agenda.
