The term ‘racism’ refers to the ideology or practice of a group to demonstrate the superiority over other groups on the basis of ethnicity, race, complexion, or cultural heritage. There is no particular area where racism is practiced. Instead, it is a global practice that can be easily noticed at every individual, institutional, or communal level. Its circulation and preservation are introduced with different pre-arranged activities and stratagems in all aspects of life including economic, societal, political, religious, educational, and cultural aspects (Feagin, Joe & McKinney 33).
Racism causes devastating negative impacts on the society, particularly people who experience it on a regular basis. Biasness has caused the blurring of whites’ minds as they still focus on the past misunderstandings and conflicts with the black people. Racism makes white people think that they are a superior race because of their complexion. Thin mind set has created artificial hopes in every area of life. One of the most significant effects of racism in American society is that black women are mistreated and physically tortured. This practice has also devalued the status of white women. Racism also distorts democratic ideas and system. As a result, merit is not preferred. Instead, people are given opportunities on the basis of their race. Furthermore, racism creates conflict between provisions of equal rights and opportunities for all by maintaining the superiority of whites. This practice of prejudice and narrow-mindedness has changed whites psychologically by making them suspicious and hateful towards the blacks. Huge sums of money are also spent to exploit racism. In addition, time and energy are also wasted to disgrace blacks and to discriminate them as social beings. Racism has also aggravated other major societal issues including poor quality of life for blacks, crime rates’ increase, unemployment, prostitution, etc. It has made a barrier between classes whereby blacks are treated as inferior members. The entire American society today is infected by racism as majority of blacks do not have public service accessibility. It is important to mention that racism weighs down the general strength of a nation by creating a social divide among various classes. This ideology based on racist thoughts has blinded even the massive numbers of so-called educated Americans. It is because they are not capable of seeing and understanding the negative impacts of the evilness brought by racism on fellow human beings with a different skin color. The practice of discrimination has restricted and decreased the contributions that may be provided by many citizens belonging to different racial backgrounds. Their talent and experience go to waste just because their different racial identities. The minimized social interactions among people of different races weaken the nation in due course. Racism has inflicted intensified ideas on a global level as whites assume that they are better than blacks in every way. Every passing day encourages this negative and stereotype thinking. However, the consequences of racism pave way for pessimistic and dejected classes (Sears, Sidanius & Bobo).
