Two months ago, I participated in a session of the European Youth Parliament. The EYP holds its sessions all around the world, and people from different countries come to discuss some controversial issues such as terrorism, environmental problems or gender inequality. There are a few committees, which are formed according to the number of issues. Every committee is to present the resolution to the topic, and then members of the board decide whether they approve it or not. It was very important for me to participate, because I felt that this was the best way to communicate with foreigners and become aware of world’s topical questions. Although I really wanted to take part in this session, I was not sure that I would be able to speak freely in front of many people. I was afraid to fail or to say something wrong, but soon I understood that all those fears were vain. Some of my friends were also coming, so I felt that I would be supported if something went wrong.
At the beginning, I felt not so confident, because I do not like such situations, when you have to meet some strangers, get to know them and present yourself. It often happens that I experience a serious lack of self-confidence, and that was one of such cases. However, later I realized that all people were really nice and interesting. During the team-buildings, we found out many interesting facts about every member of our group. By the way, my committee focused on the problem of gender inequality, so I had many new facts to discover. We stayed in the hotel, where we could get to know each other better and hang out in the evenings. The hotel was rather cheap. I remember long dark passages, noisy elevator and old furniture. But it did not matter to me, as I had some great people by my side.
As the first day of team-building passed, we had to gather the information about our issue and try to find some proper solutions to it. It involved constant communication, and everybody was able to express his or her opinion. We learned how to trust and respect each other. I enjoyed this process a lot, because it taught me how to be patient and polite. Sometimes I thought that people would judge me, but luckily, it did not happen. Actually, I think that I did a good job and helped with the resolution a lot. Surprisingly, I was one of the most active members of the group. As soon as I felt that I like the surrounding, all my doubts vanished into the thin air.
Still, the main performance was held on the third day of the session. The conference took place in the borough council, so this had already proven that the event must be serious. Members of the boards, participants and even some journalists gathered to examine resolutions of all committees. Every member of the committee had his or her responsibility, for instance, answering the questions, defending the resolution or making an attack speech on other resolutions. Everybody felt very nervous, let alone me, because I have never participated in such events. It was frightening to imagine a situation when I am at loss and do not know what to say in front of all people. Despite all my fears, I suddenly realized that I am confident enough, because our resolution was quite logical and considered. When people started to ask all the questions, I was concentrated on possible answers, and nothing could distract me. Then came the moment when I had to speak. I had only a few seconds to brace myself, and I managed to suppress all the panic thoughts. This short moment of my speech passed so quickly, that I did not have time to be scared of what I was doing. Everything went good, and chairs of my committee even praised me.
Finally, when all the committees upheld their resolutions, vice-president and president of the session said a few words about the event, summarized everything and wished us to be self-confident and concerned about world’s problems. There were no winners or losers, as the main purpose of this event was to make youth aware of some significant troubles and try to find some solutions. There was just one thing, which made me feel a little bit confused. How can a bunch of kinds find solutions to some controversial problems which even world’s politicians cannot resolve? We discussed it with my friends at some point, and felt that this is one of the cons of the event.
Nevertheless, this session had a significant influence on me and on my attitude to many things. To start with, I realized that it is useless to be afraid of some public events or speeches. It is usually a lot of fun, and this is the best way to gain some unique experience. Now I am sure, that if I have a chance to meet new people and do something useful for me, I will not miss it. Although sometimes I had butterflies in my stomach, most of the time I enjoyed everything. I was excited to meet people from different countries, and I made some friends there.
So, due to this event I become more self-confident, found some friends from foreign countries, learned how to keep calm and be ready to any surprises. Therefore, I would advise everybody not to miss some great opportunities in their lives and enjoy everything as much as possible.
