I am a student taking a major in Visual Communication at this institution. However, I failed in two of my courses which made me receive a dismissal letter. However, I wish to appeal for the revocation of the decision and seek a re-enrolment back to school since I feel the precipitating events for my dismissal were not purely academic. Below are the reasons as to why I got a GPA of 2.0 which led to my dismissal, and an explanation as to how I expect to improve my academic performance.
First of all, I am an international student from Taiwan. I was born and raised in Taiwan and only came to the U.S in my second year of study. As such, English is not my first language and I had a lot of problems in understanding the concepts. It was quite hard for me, though I put in my level best. When I joined, I struggled in History and Art in quarter 1 and 2, but this was largely attributed to the fact that English was so tough for me. I therefore could not remember the artistic works as well as the artists themselves.
Despite these difficulties, I worked hard and made it through in my academics, only failing in two units in my course which led to the decision to dismiss me. However there are valid reasons as to why I failed in them as explained below. Visual communication was one of the subjects. The reason as to why I failed is because I failed to have some of the portfolio needed for the final, but this happened due to family obligations. There was also the Computer Rendering course. The failure in this course was greatly attributed to the fact that I had contemplated dropping the class through the portal. However, I failed to check my portal after that, only to check when it was too late and the deadline for a call-off had already expired. Of course, this saw me getting an F in the course. As it is evidenced above, the reasons as to why I failed in these courses are not purely academic. It is on these grounds that I ask for a second chance to straighten the wrongs.
If given a second chance, there are some measures that I intend to put in place so as to improve my performance. First of all, I will seek to be a more frequent and efficient user of the library services. I will be quite vigilant in consulting the library advisor as well as checking into the material room so as to gain as much as possible. Secondly, I will strive to create more time for my academic work. As such, I will re-organize my weekly schedules so that I can accommodate more of academic work in my program. Lastly, I realize that there is a need to improve my sense in fashion. As such, I will be keen in looking for and reading more of fashion magazines such as the Vouge, and watch more news on fashion. In another attempt to improve my skills, I will take a quarter off in summer during which I will go back home in Taiwan and attend an illustrator class. While there, I will also attend some fashion classes which I hope will increase my illustrator skills. Through these efforts and the passion for my course, I hope to improve my grades and prove my worth at the institution. However, this can only happen if I am given another chance at the institution. That is why I am appealing the dismissal decision. I will be grateful if my appeal is considered positively.
