Social media and instant communication pose a serious obstacle to reflection and serious thinking. This is because, with the presence of social media, one can access any information that might require thinking and critical reasoning. Since one can easily access such information that might require serious thinking and reflection on the social media, it may make him or her to be lazy to think out. Instead of thinking out, he or she will go to the social media and such for the information. For this reason, the media possess a serious risk to his or her ability to thinking.
With the presence of internet, a lot of information is posted which people might rely on it thinking that it is true. With the growing levels of technology, many people, more so students tend to ignore reading books which give precise information which requires critical thinking and reflection about it so as to get the important message. They tend to use internet which give shallow information which does not any form of reasoning. For this season, they don’t reason out in any way. This therefore poses as risk to the levels of thinking and reflection among such individuals.
Instant communication platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, twitter, skype among others transmit the information within a short time. When one gets the information via such platforms, they tend to respond as quickly as possible. With such instant response, one does not have any time to reason or think before responding to such messages. For this reason, such instant communication platforms and social media pose a serious obstacle to thinking and reflection.
Another way through which students can enhance their reflection is taking some moments to settle in a silent place free from destructions. In such a silent place, the student’s mind will be able to reflect on any issue, both academic and non-academic. A quite environment is an ideal place that enhances reflection. Students are therefore encouraged to spend some moments in a silent place so as to enhance their reflection.
Furthermore, for a sufficient and effective reflection, a college student needs to use any verbal and non-verbal cues which will enable him or her to reflect clearly. When reflecting upon an individual who is giving a talk, the student should focus on the person’s emotion and use of body language which is used to convey specific information. The student needs to focus on the individuals’ facial expression to get the message that is being conveyed.
Moreover, in a more connected and instantaneous world, college students needs to reduce their use of social media such as Facebook, twitter, skype, WhatsApp among others. These social media platforms reduce one’s ability to reflect properly. A college student is therefore advised to minimize his or her usage of such social media platform. When doing this, he or she will have a humble time to reflect in a good way.
