Man is a social creature by nature. The social arrangement creates a society which has a culture of its own. The culture tends to maintain the societal order (Anon. 5). Furthermore, the idea that the first human beings were social indicates that the society is an important concept of the human life. With this in mind, it is important to look at the difference between men and women with the aim of identifying whether the difference is biological or a social construction. This discussion seeks to prove that the difference is as a result of the social function. Anon. (9) holds that the treatment of women in the society asserts the fact that the difference is just a social construction. There is the example of the American women and how her roles have evolved with the changing times. Before civilization, the women were seen as men’s property, present so as to make a man’s life more bearable. However, as the society evolved, the relationship became more mutual with the woman taking care of the home while the man provided economically. After the World Wars, it became apparent that women could do just as much as the men could do. Their abilities were similar (Anon. 10). It cannot be denied that women and men are anatomically different, however, this biological concept has not changed aver time, but the relationship between the two has changed as the society became more civilized. This asserts the point that the expression of the difference between men and women is a mere social construction. If it was biological, nothing would have changed over time since the biological combination of the genders has not changed. As Anon (14) puts it, the society does not determine who we are but its effects cannot be denied. The gender difference is just one of the effects.
