The author himself has spent his childhood in South Carolina where his parents used to work in a cotton mill. The book gives an account of Appalachian workers who migrated from their ancestral villages to the industrial towns. The author through his poetry portrays the sufferings, hard working hours, low wages and other human emotional events. Further the book discusses the economical condition of the whole region and highlights the poverty of the people .
