All the films viewed in class have the same story line and issues that are hidden with a stronger power trying to conceal the truth. Those in power use it to their advantage by manipulating those under them to work for them yet they have some things that they want to be kept as secrets. This is evident in all the films and as seen in the Nasty girl the towns people have secrets from the past that they do not want to face and neither do they want them to be known to the public. The main characters in this film get to know about the secrets through their own investigations though most of the time they are threatened by their superiors when they get too close to the truth. The story of the nasty girl is about the secrets of a town that haunts it due to the events that took place in the place.
The main characters carried out private enquiries and jeopardize their own lives in order to have informed knowledge of what the officers were hiding. This brings out the issue of misuse of power to cover up the secrets of those in power. Goodbye Lenin revolves around the effects of change on the natives and how his or her decision affects the stability in the nation. The mother in this case represents the old people who do not easily adapt to change and want to hold on to the familiar things while the father is one who goes away and leaves the familiar settings to fight for change.
The movie reflects on how the youth embrace change easily while the old are reluctant to change their ways, as they prefer living a familiar life than adapting to the rapid changes that come with new things. The choice of the mother to remain in the communist state shows how important it is for one to put his or her country first before his or her individual needs. The lives of others has the same plot and issues as the Tunnel and the Nasty Girl as it has issues of hidden agenda that one has to do investigation to find out. It is about misuse of power by those in authority for their own selfish gains. The superior uses his junior Wiesler to get a chance to date the girlfriend of his enemy using the excuse that he suspects him of communist ideas. All these films revolve around politics, how one event shapes the other, and the victims of the circumstances are those who have no say in the matters of the power. The few who decide to go after the truth face many challenges and some lose their lives in the process.
Fascism in Germany and Italy
This is a form of governance where the state is in total control. The citizens have to work for the country and the governments head is a powerful dictator who has absolute say. Fascism came about in Germany in the 1930s after Adolf Hitler’s National Socialism came into power and in Italy it came about after the first World War when Benito Mussolini tool over the leadership in Italy. The Fascist governments have absolute power over politics and no other political power or party is given a chance in the country. The government has absolute power and control over the newspapers, magazines, radios and television.
Fascism rose into power because many people had no idea what democracy was and in Italy people were bitter of how they were treated during the world war and they wanted a leader who would bring pride back to them. They engaged in street fights and this is how Mussolini became dictator of Italy after his followers engaged in fights with the soldiers and the other citizens. Fascism in Germany started with the victory of the Nazi party led by Hitler who then used his power and military to expand his territories in Germany. The fascists believe that only the strong in the community can survive.
The fascism spirit came into the minds of the Nazi group because they felt cheated on by the Jews who they blamed for their defeat in the World War. After Hitler’s rise into power in 1931 anti-Jews, laws were implemented attacking the Jews and restricting their freedom. The Jews were sanctioned from most amenities like schools, bars, public offices and schools. However, the blow came in 1935 when the real attacks against the Jews started. The Nazis started by demanding that the Jews leave German, but they were not allowed to take their wealth. After some time they drove the Jews to ghettoes and decreased the food and water supply to these areas restricted by a wall built around it. The entry of the Soviet Union made the situation worse as the created the SS which killed the Jews with the slogan anti-Semite being used. The killing of the Jews did not end there they used the women’s hair and eyes extracted from dead bodies to make felt. Freezing people alive to perform medical experiments did more killings.
