Dear Dr. Eugene,
My name is [Name]. I am a student at [College/University]. I am concerned regarding the budget cuts proposed by Mayor Bill De Blasio, particularly those effecting the summer programs for youth in New York City. It is my belief that such programs are essential in providing young people with supervised settings in which they are able to not only achieve further education, but personal development as well. Many working parents rely on these programs to feel secure that their children will have a safe and secure place to spend their summer days while not in school.
I spoke today with Ms. Morgan Rubin of the Campaign for Children. It is my understanding that while the budget cuts have already been introduced by Mayor De Blasio to the City Council, there may still be time to forestall these budget cuts.
I understand that you are the Chair for the Committee for Youth Services, and as such, an advocate for children. It is for this reason that I am writing to you. I would suggest that an injunction be served on the city to delay these budget restrictions, in order to restore these services for children within the city while there is still time to do so.
While I understand that this proposal is not a guaranteed option, it may be a solution, at least for the time being, to re-establish funds for these programs. If successful, it would lift the burden from working parents. These families rely on such programs to provide safe and secure alternatives for their children during summer months. Such a solution could also decrease the demand on other agencies to provide low income families with subsidized child care, for instance.
It is important that we realize and understand the impact of such programs for young people today, especially for those families that are working hard, and simply trying to make ends meet.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
