In spite of the fact that World War I happened more than one hundred years ago, there are still many unanswered questions and a lot of controversy around it. The war started after assassination of the duke of Austria-Hungary Ferdinand by a Serbian nationalist, and shortly after the conflict between the two states, many other countries, including their colonies, were involved. However, many rulers were assassinated throughout history, and not every time such a huge conflict took place. In the case of World War I, tension had been growing for a long time before the explosion. With that said, it would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to avoid the war. Nationalism flourished in a number of Slavic countries supported by the huge Russian empire, and Austria-Hungary with its allies (Germany and the Ottoman Empire) waited for the moment to put an end to it. In fact, for all of the superpowers that were involved in the conflict, the war should have been beneficial: Ottoman Empire wanted to secure its influence, and the rest of the world wanted to destroy it. Russian Empire waited for an appropriate moment to overthrow its imperial rule. Germany was eager to extend its borders and invaded a number of countries that didn’t support their enemy. The empire took advantage of the political instability of the world and caused a number of alliances to fall apart. By invading the neutral countries and having a passionate ruler with a desire to run a military expansion, Germany caused a wave of disdain and was essentially blamed for starting of World War I. Thus, the war was nothing but a plan for several superpowers to gain influence on the world and couldn’t be avoided.
