Communication is a significant method to deal, among human beings. There are different ways to communicate. Speaking, writing and non-verbal communication are ways of expressing our thoughts and behaviors. The main function of communication is to convey our message to other people, clearly. Understanding exactly what other people say is a perfect result of communication. Here we have two kinds of persons, the sender who talks and the receiver who listens. Nevertheless, some individuals can talk, write but, the important point is how effective one is in these. In order to convince other people, we should know how to choose the right kind of words and also how to present them to communicate effectively. According to communication skills experts, “ these days we’re losing our listing, we use or spend sixty percent of our communication in listening; unfortunately, we are not good at it; in fact, we get just twenty five percent of what we hear which are things that we knew or pay attention to”. So, before one becomes a good speaker, one should be a good listener. The question here is how can we be good listeners? There are many factors to consider in being an excellent listener such as; being careful and focused on what the other person is talking about, being aware of their body language because other people may indicate some emotions on what they feel about the topic. It is important to look at the other person’s eyes or their chin, nose or forehead in case if we are not comfortable with direct eye contact. Retell what other people are saying, in a question to make sure that you are listening to them, also praise the person who is talking by making a compliment; there is always something good in speech so one would not have to look hard. To be effective in communication, one has to be an attentive listener.
Having confidence in what we are saying is the other way to effective communication. Having confidence in oneself makes the speaker credible and more believable. When one is unsure of what they want to say, it makes the interaction awkward. To avoid this, one should prepare before hand and also thing of possible questions that the listener may ask this is especially important in formal speeches and presentations.
Another important factor to put in mind is the circumstances for the speech. It is necessary to be aware of the listener’s culture o background in order to avoid awkward talk. For instance, do not say something that may hurt the other person’s feelings. When there’s a disagreement and it is necessary and inevitable to speak about it, say it as kindly as possible and with respect. Generally, we should think twice before saying anything, especially with strangers and also choose acceptable words that suitable.
Effective communication in necessary for success in school, at work, at home and in general social life. Good speech skills are important in expressing our thoughts in all situations. . Being a good listener also enables us to understand other parties; this translates into a good response when one is required. Words are awesome tools to convey your thoughts or ideas to the audience. Choosing the right words will ensure that we not only communicate what we intend, but also helps in avoiding awkward moments and hurting other’s feelings. Finally, effective communication skills are learned and one can improve on their communication through self- training of by seeking expert advice.
