A common issue in the workplace that is closely related to ethics is the formation of glass ceiling in the organizations for women and minorities. This issue is wrong on both legal and moral grounds. Not only the legal jurisdiction has been done on the issue, but the issue is being taught in the human resource courses in order to improve the situation.
One of my friends was working in a leading organization. She was working really hard and was achieving all her targets. Every month she remained a top performer, and outperformed the rest. Even her co-workers were happy with her, her manager also praised her, and her supervisor gave her a very good appraisal.
However, when she applied for the promotion, she received a letter of regret. This happened three times, and all three times different reasons were given for the refusal to promote her to a management position. Many of her juniors, who were not performing as well as her go promoted. She remained at the lowest level of the organization until she left the organization. Even her immediate supervisor and manager were surprised as to why her promotion letter rejected every year. She left the job for good, but the company did leave a dent on her self confidence, and later on her life, she was not as effective as she used to be. She thought that her hard work will be overshadowed by her gender. This is what happeining in top organizations around the world. Minorities and women are being treated as aliens and do not get recognized for what they do. Their services are not appreciated and they are not given their dues properly.
There are several ethical theories that confront the issue. This act of the organization can never be justified. For example, utilitarianism demands that all action must be taken for the overall good of the society. Even if a negative action is promoting the overall welfare of the society, it is justified on ethical grounds. If we assess the case of my friend, we can see that the organization made her feel bad by their refusal to promote her. This resulted in her not being as productive as before, and she also lost her self esteem. There was a loss for the company, the society, and my friend in all the case. Hence, the theory of utilitarianism will never justify the decision of the company to refuse her promotion applications thrice.
The second theory that is widely used in real world ethics is that of deontology. It state that any action that is done with the good purpose or good intention is mind is justified even if it yields a bad result. If we look at my friend’s case again, we can see that the organization had grudge against women managers. Her application was reject not because it was bad for the company, but because my friend was women. The company did not want any women in the managerial position. This theory also rejects the organization’s thinking of not promoting women and is not justified from deontological perspective.
In the end, it can be concluded that all the organizations should plan, and act keeping in mind the ethical implications of their issues. It will ensure that the right actions are taken, with the right reason, and not because of any sort of grudge against a minority or a race.
